Thing is, what's stopping Exxon from setting up shop in Australia and mining some uranium?

Someone else already owns it. No Saudi Aramco to butt-rape the locals here thanks.

Bottom line is oil provides energy so much more cheaply and conveniently than any other method, alternatives won't be appealing unless there is a huge tax incentive or oil hits U$150/barrel again.

Plus rich old white men don't like change.

Tbqf the abos in Kakadu don't own the Uranium. They own the land but the govt. retains control over the uranium deposits.

Kakadu is a nice place, you southerners should visit some time. I could drive you out there. It's only a few hundred kms from my house.

Also: Still confused as to why Australia hasn't switched from our shitty dirty coal power plants to nuke reactors. I think USM is probs right on this one though. Crazy extremist environmentalists.
