Errr games can be sports, doesn't mean they all are. Or that all sports are games.

Poker is a game, it is not a sport.
Running is a sport, it is not a game.
Football is a sport and a game.

Motor racing involves physical activity so is a sport.

His name was Bobby Fischer. It was pretty fucked up what the government did to him after that.

The game of kings and generals. A sport of the mind. Like hold 'em.

Yeah, I'm sure racers just kind of sit slumped in their cars, not doing anything but turning the wheel slightly and keeping their foot down.

Whatever the opposite of slouching in your seat is.

I'm no race car driver, but I don't think they race with all their muscles completely inert and relaxed.

Nah, chess is a game, not a sport.  Sports require physical exertion.  Guess it depends on the size of the pieces, though.  If there are life-sized that could be a sport.

Anyway, I say yes. So long as a game requires exertion of the mind or body it is a sport. This defines the difference between monopoly and chess.

I love chess, but no, it is not a competition of physical skill, and not a sport

I wouldn't call it athletic. But it is certainly played for sport.

If you think about it.... doesn't all sports have some sort of risk for injury..

Hockey? getting beaten to death by a pissed of Canadian with a stick
Football?  Being tackled by a coke machine with arms and legs
Basketball? twising your ankle.
Tennis? Twisting yor ankle.
Ping Pong? Straining your wrist.
MotoX? Severe Head Injury from a long fall.
Soccer? getting kicked in the tenders

Chess?.. getting a rook throw at you, I don't think that counts.

Mos' def. I was undefeated in my chess team for the one season i played.

But then again i play lawn bowls as well and have to convince people that's a sport and not an "activity".

I disagree. Motor racing counts as a sport because it's not just pushing pedals down and turning a wheel. In Rally driving look at the drivers and the navigators, they look like their physically fighting their cars. It requires utmost concentration and requires the driver and navigator being like coiled springs in order to keep their reaction times fast enough to not crash. That kind of driving is physically exhausting.

In lastability kind of races like the Indy 500 I can see what you mean, you see the drivers emerge after that and they're not exactly puffing and panting. They're mentally exhausted but I imagine that would be a similar feeling after a Chess tournament too.

There's certainly a grey area. However no matter what you call motor racing, either a race, a sport or perhaps even a game, Chess still fits in as a game. Not a sport. Not a race. A game.

Still, sports don't have to be physically demanding.

A game that is played competitively and abides by a set set of rules and is often played in tournaments or leagues.

Chess fits the description and is unfortunately considered a sport.
