They're banned because they have serious health-problems relating to their breed, and generally aren't healthy or long-lived animals-- plus the fact that historically they were only bred and domestically reared for several (violent and cruel) purposes. With that said, as well as all of our other different laws (e.g. guns)- I can say that it's not a case of us Brits needing to learn some responsibility, it's a case of you Americans needing to learn some humanity.Macbeth wrote:

And yes, re: gameness. My dad's Rhodesian Ridgebacks were very hard dogs to train and rear, traditionally being bred as some of the biggest 'game' dogs and hunting-hounds you can get -- historically used to pack-hunt lions in South Africa. Very kind, loyal and loving dogs though if you can tame their suspicion of strangers and their absolute hunting brutality. 'Game' dogs are tame, restrained but still capable in terms of fitness and aggression, 'aggressive' dogs are just the sad rejects of the rearing process - normally because of bad owners - that haven't been taught how to restrain or control their inherent lethality.
