North County Times wrote:

FALLBROOK ---- Starting this month, if you're to blame for a traffic wreck in the Fallbrook area, your insurance company will get a bill for the time and effort it takes firefighters to clean up your mess.

The new fee, or "crash tax," as some opponents call it, is not unique to the North County Fire Protection District, which serves roughly 50,000 people from Fallbrook to Bonsall to Rainbow.

Similar charges have been approved across California and the nation in recent months as cash-strapped local governments try to balance their recession-wracked budgets. Fire departments from Fresno to Hemet to Spring Valley are considering similar programs or have already put them in place, said Chief Bill Metcalf of the Fallbrook-area district.

Insurance companies are the main opponents. They call the fee "double taxation," noting that homeowners already pay property taxes to cover emergency response.

Metcalf, however, said the charge is a fair way to recover costs during a tough economic time.

"The only person that will pay is the insurance company of the at-fault driver," the chief said by phone last week. "People who aren't at fault, they or their insurance company won't experience any payment."

Bills will range from $435 (€312) to $2,100 (€1,504) depending on the severity of the car wreck and service required. The charges were calculated based on per-hour labor and equipment costs, Metcalf said.

If firefighters simply help with traffic control and clean up spilled gasoline, the cost will be less than $500 (€358). But if their response involves battling a car fire, helping victims with oxygen masks, cutting apart a car to rescue victims and helping a medical helicopter land, then the cost will jump to $2,100 (€1,504), according to the district's plan.
I would be ok with this IF I could write off what I paid if I was 'at fault' against my property taxes and county income taxes, otherwise this is double taxation.

Well it wasn't the thief who dented the car.

It's not asinine, but it's unfair that homeowners pay taxes for those public services and then again if something happens to them.

This may bite me in the ass, but do firefighters send you the bill if you're house catches on fire?

We've had that Law in Montana for years, but do we actually turn around and bill the Insurance Company?  Nope.

When BNSF over turned a few hazmat cars.  We definitely submitted a bill, they could afford it.

I think the aim is more for avoidable accidents.  Such as a DUI driver causing a 10 car pile up Etc, not just Joe fucface that backs into a truck and breaks his rear window.

Looks like anyone in California can expect massive increases in their insurance premiums. What sounds like a fair and sensible scheme will end up being paid for by all drivers in the state and some costs potentially passed on to motorists across the country.

Bad idea.

California's going bankrupt from all the social services it pays, cut those and you'll be able to afford the fire fighters

'Free' fire fighting is a social service.

but on the scale of cost to the state it's minuscule compared to the welfare and unemployment you dole out annually

quote for fucking truth. people in this world need to take more responsibility for their actions. example: speeding tickets. if you in fact get pulled over, don't lie or make up an excuse. if you are honest and take responsibility then you will have a very good chance of getting off with a warning, and if you do get a ticket. don't bitch its your own fault for going so fast.

But that's not what will happen. It's a stupid idea, because the increased insurance premiums will be passed on to everyone.

No one will be paying for this stuff out of their own pockets.

Easy there little fella'. I didn't see anyone in this thread posting "oh no, I don't want to be held personally responsible." It seems the argument against this is that this service is already being paid for through taxes, and that continuing to levy this portion of taxes paid while charging for the same service a second time on a per-use basis seems somewhat strange.

In the end, the best case scenario is that the money you paid in tax for emergency services will be charged by insurance companies through higher premiums instead, and that you'll receive the same level of service, while the worst case scenario is that you'll pay the same as before, but have to fight with your insurance company to cover the cost of emergency services. In any case, the consumer won't be better off.

That's a poor example. Taxes are paid to make sure that the law is enforced, and there are fines paid for breaking it. Two very different things. In this case you're paying taxes for the service that these firefighters provide, while having to pay fees for the very same service performed by the very same people in case of an accident. You're paying for the same thing twice.

So it's essentially a moneymaking scheme for contractors.  There's already a budget in place for paying those guys -- unless they got rid of it (which would be amazingly stupid but par for the course for California).
