Do you agree with this or not?  I am up in the air.  I pay less for my hotel room per week (thank you hotwire.com).

----------

First, Sheriff Tim Evinger eliminated ketchup, salt, coffee and pepper at the jail, a move he says saved an instant $30,000 a year in runaway beverage and condiment costs.

Now, Evinger has decided to start charging inmates $60 a day to help cover the costs of their stay behind bars.

They are going to go right back towards crime after they get out to pay that bill.

Don't give them another reason or an excuse. Rather have them work jobs on the inside.

Jail/prison must be much harsher than freedom to be a deterrent.

I have never understood inmates having televisions with remote controls as they sometimes do.

Pay to stay sounds great, the inmates often time do some sort of work inside anyway. Instead of money they can spend on junk food and toiletries have all the money they earn go towards covering the cost on incarceration.

Hey, let's put a bunch of thieves, rapists and murderers together in a confined space and hope that when we release them they aren't bad anymore!

I'm just saying, the current prison system is so flawed and wasteful, and making it harsher is not going to help much.

This would probably work more for white collar criminals than violent ones.  Most violent/property crimes are committed by people who aren't going to have much money in the first place.

Seems pointless, either they won't pay, or they'll go deeper into the crap when they get out - no point in earning honest money only to hand it over to pay for jail.

Using them for useful work to help cover costs makes more sense, and might give them some exercise and sense of achievement they never had before.
I don't see why prisons should cost much to run, they can do their own laundry and cooking - even food production, shouldn't really need many staff if set up properly.

I think the best thing to do would be to make them grow their own food, take away the tv, air conditioning, computer usage, and give them a well or a spigot that they can haul their own water out of. And while their at it, make them do some type of productive work. Jail is far too cushy if you're trying to reform people with it.

Raise your hand if you've been to jail for more than a night.

So how the fuck does anyone here know how "cushy" it is?  I've been to jail and it fucking sucked.  Get some perspective and try again.

Why I don't agree with this particular proposal-

This is a ploy to increase revenue - it's not as if the state will take away $60 x the amount of inmates affected from the prison coffers.  Taxpayers won't benefit from charging the inmates.

It opens up all kinds of liability for lawsuits.  If someone is charged with a crime but not convicted, could they then charge the state for the cost of legal representation?  If someone is charged with a crime and held but not convicted, will they be allowed to sue the prison system for costs?

Prisoners already pay with their freedom.  I'm guessing most criminals won't have the money to pay when they get out of jail, so it seems like an increased burden that lowers the already ridiculously low percentage of success.

Dont lock anyone up because prison is worse than torture.
