I will soon be upgrading my computer with more RAM, and have a few questions for anyone that can help.

Currently I have:

- Intel 875P Chipset
- P4 3.0GHz w/ Hyper Threading.
- 2 x 512MB 400Mhz DDR SDRAM
- ATi Radeon 9800PRO 128MB

The computer is also a Dell.

Having used 2 of the 4 RAM slots, I am wondering if I am able to add 2 x 1GB 400Mhz DDR SDRAM cards into the unused slots.

If I can, can anyone suggest respected brands and a possible price (in Australia if possible)?

Would my suggested upgrade see a significant improvement in not just only Battlefield but also programs like Photoshop?

Well, you wont need more RAM than 2GB, windows XP doesnt now what to do with 2GB+ ram.

+1 for the idea, just get 1 stick of 1gb and upgrade other components (ie, switch to pcie if you havent already, just a few ideas to ponder)

Thanks for the ideas guys. I will prob still get the 2 1GB sticks because I plan to get Photoshop CS2 in the future. With that, more RAM is better. Its also the fact that the RAM gets the best upgrade for the cost.

I could only find DDR SDRAM at 333Mhz. That would bring the speed of the 2 512 sticks down from 400 to 333Mhz.

I have found this http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.store … iew/XH8302 at Dicksmith, a shop that is close. Is the price any good (remember its in aus dollars)?

www.newegg.com usually has the best prices.
XP (32 bit) actually supports up to 4gb of ram.  the 64 bit version can handle 8.
I got 2x1gb from newegg about a month ago for $160 USD.  Dunno what that would be in australian money.

Make sure you get even multiples of two so you will still have DDR functionality.  Your 2x512 and an additional 2x1gb would work just fine.  2x512 and 1x1gb would eliminate DDR since it needs two sticks of the same size/type in the appropriate channels to function.

u sure? coz i think u forgot to look at the tabs lol, they seperate the pages for the ram speeds

http://www.crucial.com/store/listmodule … DDR+PC3200

heres the ddr400 page.

crucial makes their own ram, other companies like corsair buy their ram from manufacturors and sell em
