Very true. I suppose you could say the basis of capitalism shares a lot in common with crime.imortal wrote:

While I agree that anyone can be greedy, your choice of using Wall Street as an example is interesting. Gekko generally preached a more practical form of greed. He was looking at the long run, not the short term.imortal wrote:
I think that 'careless greed' pretty much applies to everyone. It is just that it has a greater effect in some than in others. Think of the effect drug dealers have on their neighborhoods; does that stop them? Rampant greed pretty much always has some negative effects. What effect it has is dependant on the position of the person.
Remember the '80s movie "Wall Street?" "Greed is good." Oh, and there is a reason that Greed is one of the 7 deadly sins.
If anything, most of what we see in the real Wall Street is "vulture capital."
If we don't adopt a Star Trek model of planetary society we will perish as a species.
Remember those words.

We're going to perish then.ATG wrote:

But seriously... the colonization of other planets will likely save us, but it's not likely to be a Star Trek model. I think Brave New World in space is more likely.
It all depends how you look at it. I think of capitalism as being able to keep what I earn. If I veiw socialism or communism as 'taking what is mine to give it to someone who did not earn it,' then socialism has a lot in common with crime, too (taking what does not belong to you). This is one of those no-win conversations.Turquoise wrote:

It is funny how America dies with the influx of modern liberalism brought on by Jimmy Carter.
Exactly how is it, anyone expects a country to survive with a belief system that rewards non-achievement and punishes achievement anyway?
You really expect people to take private risks for the public good with no pay off?
The higher liberal ideology grows the weaker America becomes, it is no coincidence.
Damn that Carter... its all his fault.

I know you are being a smart ass, but the fact is, he opened the floodgates like it or not.AussieReaper wrote:

Seriously though, you can't see that the right system has to be a balance between pure capitalism and pure socialism? Both extremes are hugely flawed.

Nope, we need the risk takers, we do not need the free loaders.AussieReaper wrote:

Providing opportunity throgh private risk, and the eventual payoff and growth is what is needed. Not a bunch of fools walking around thinking they are entitled to the good life by the work and risk of others.
Detroit is a perfect example of liberalism failing huge.Flecco wrote:

We need a system that absolutely excludes monetary use. It must have intelligent resource management and automated production facilities. Humans to work for intelligent goals such as space exploration/ medicine/ technology advance.AussieReaper wrote:

Neither Capitafail, Socialfail and Communifail get it right.
And yes I realize this is the 1001th time I said this.

Good luck convincing people to set aside several thousand years of political, ethnic, religious and cultural conflict though.

Paid maternity leave is a very socialist concept, but rather than a woman quitting her job, with it she is more likely to rejoin the workforce.lowing wrote:

Can you even acknowledge any benefits of a centric system, or does any remotely socialist concept equal "free loaders"?

If I had to guess I'd say lowing will tell you paid maternity leave should be left to the discretion of the employer, as ultimately it is their money and their job they are offering to others, putting their reputation on the line by employing these people as part of their company.AussieReaper wrote:

The biggest risk takers where the bankers. Your kids will be paying for their mistakes and greed. Biggest socialist payout ever. Risk takers who became free loaders.lowing wrote:
