I think you're probably right. Ireland isn't that diverse but has quite a few minority groups now. The only areas that are 'no-go' are the knacker areas ('the projects' is the term in the US I believe), which generally house lazy white trash.Turquoise wrote:

Hmmmmm. It seems that this place is just a shithole working class area where dole-queue professionals are a bit annoyed that some brown people have moved into their area. But having said that, posting road signs of that nature is unacceptable.

Working class areas always, always, have antagonism between the 'natives' and the immigrant or 'not like us' population because they compete for the same low-skilled jobs as them (if at all). It doesn't matter what race or what creed. I've seen knacker taxi drivers shouting abuse at Nigerians in the street in the same manner. It's the nature of impoverished and working class areas. Do you think the locals have tried in the least to welcome these people into their country? I would venture not. The animosity is quite probably very mutual and feeds on itself and these ugly incidents are of concern but do not seem to be endemic on the basis of the comments of local community leaders. I'd like to see a report into anti-immigrant violence and abuse in this area. You can bet it would be significant. It's just the nature of poor areas of cities all over the world. I've been in parts of Glasgow in the UK that are almost totally white that I knew I had to get out of asap or I would get assaulted. It's poverty, pure and simple.benefit wrote:

That does not come across in the article you posted whatsoever. It notes one incident of a sign being put up in the past 'several years'. Why would obviously quite racist people from Alum Rock be venturing five miles across town to a place they don't like to see a signpost put up by some obviously quite racist people anyway?
