Five Birmingham police officers have been fired for a January 2008 beating of an already-unconscious suspect with fists, feet and a billy club, a battering caught on videotape until a police officer turned off the patrol car camera, city and police officials said today.

Authorities believe the video, taken after a high-speed chase by several area law enforcement agencies ended when the fleeing suspect's van flipped.

In fact, investigators say, the suspect, Anthony Warren, didn't even know he'd been beaten until the tape surfaced at his trial in March. Warren was ejected from the vehicle and knocked unconscious, and thought all of his injuries were sustained in the wreck.

Police Chief A.C. Roper called the video "shameful." Mayor Larry Langford said it was "disgusting."

Roper said the video shamed the police department and the citizens served by the department, saying it was especially troubling because these were seasoned, veteran officers.

Wut do u think? Where do you stand? Do u think the beating was over the top? or u ok with the beating of unconscious people? or you think there is more to the story than whats presented? but yeah he punched a cop before going on to a high speed chase.

Looked like the officers were too excited from the situation to even notice that they guy wasn't moving. I might be pissed off too if somebody was putting innocent civilian lives on the line by driving like a jackass and almost running down a fellow officer.

You left out the part where the guy swerved his car and narrowly missed trying to kill an officer.

Cops really are judge/jury/excutioner at a crime seen. They see what happens (judge). They make a decision on what is to be done (jury). And they carry out the punishment (executioner), which is usually an arrest.

He was no threat to them, they were working out their frustration on his limp lifeless body.

The police are not the jury; the police are not the executioners. It is the police officers' job to arrest the alleged criminal in accordance with the laws society has agreed upon. The judicial system issues the punishment in civilized countries, not the arresting party. A cop has no right to beat a person they just arrested up - regardless if the beatdown is warranted or not. Why even have a judicial system if we are just going to let the cops dictate the punishment based on what they see? It is unprofessional; it gives the impression that is the way all cops act, even though the overwhelming majority aren't brute force assholes. Imagine if people judged all cops based on a few rogue cops' actions - kind of like how you judge Islam based on the worst of the bunch instead of the overwhelming majority.
