oh, yeah, now if you could somehow explain how ussr's intent in this was to kick start a world fucking war (in which, btw, ussr endured the heaviest losses among all other countries) we'd be all set.
that's a miss, dude. try again.
so what? juddung by what info i have available to me, stalin and his crew didn't probably think poland was a huge issue. by the way hitler acted, anybody could guess his intentions. stalin actually thought hitler wouldn't attack russia, not before he conquered all of the western europe anyway. who knows, maybe by that time stalin hoped to fortify ussr and build his own army to export communism to eastern europe? he probably regarded poland as a piece off of hitlers cake - why shoudn't he have taken it? did the ww2 start with that? i dunno. tbqh, i don't think it mattered much. hitler would start it anyway, with or without ussr' involvement. so.....usmarine wrote:

Actually I asked it because in his post it sounds like Finland is under threat of imminent invasion from Russia.Shahter wrote:

All that because USSR wanted little territory.

not imminent invasion, but the influence of having such trigger-happy neighbour effects our political desicions.Flecco wrote:

Don't think Russia would touch Finland dude. Exert some useless dick swinging policies with regards to trade and diplomatic relations yes, but military force? Nah.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

I can't really actually think of any solid, material reason for Russia being interested in Finland right now. Some political bullshit but Russia wouldn't deploy military forces into Finland. Waste of lives, time and money. Just as I don't think that Finland would go to war with Russia over any possible oil resources in the Arctic circle.
No more than if they happen to be on the same planet as the USA or China methinks. Just check Australia's trade record with the USA. Fuck me, we bend over backwards to accommodate them. China a bit too.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

They attacked us once. They probe our air defence capabilities every day. They influece politics hard. Sole reason for us having mandatory armed forces... etc.
Trust me you got no idea what its like to have a big bully that keeps sticking you with needles once in a while. They don't need a reason to attack anyone.
No I wouldn't expect anything from than in next years, but they are notorious for being highly irrational when it comes to wars.
Finnish army is solely for defence. Hence the name Finnish Defence Forces. So yeah we wouldn't go war with anyone until its last resort.

look, m8, now i admit that russia's been known for sticking it where it doesn't belong, but "being highly irrational when it comes to wars" is completely out there (unless it's some language problem and you ment to say "unpredictable" or somthing like that). nobody fights a war "irrationally".GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

Really? I what way did he instigate the war? I'm actually serious here, if you have info about this that I don't know about, I'd really be interested to see it.
saddam refused to trade his oil for us bucks and for that he got toppled - so, in a way, he started it.Nic wrote:

Guess when the USA came knocking in Afghanistan the Taliban should have just handed Bin Laden over. If they even knew where he was.

but that's the point. different states have their own interests in the - seemingly - strangest of places. SU and USA used to fight those proxy wars and nobody in their right mind would say it was pointless, right? the problem with a lot of people here is that they think their human categories can be applied on the level of state security and international politics, when in reality those things are completely beyond anyone's personal notion of good and evil. Russia warned that whoever tries to mess with those resources will have to face serious consequences as any fucking state would do in Russia's place, so stop this finger poiting and "omg, teh evil russians are threatening a war"-whining already.Man With No Name wrote:
