TimesOnline wrote:

Russia raised the prospect of war in the Arctic yesterday as nations struggle for control of the world’s dwindling energy reserves.

The country’s new national security strategy identified the intensifying battle for ownership of vast untapped oil and gas fields around its borders as a source of potential military conflict within a decade.

“The presence and potential escalation of armed conflicts near Russia’s national borders, pending border agreements between Russia and several neighbouring nations, are the major threats to Russia’s interests and border security,” stated the document, which analysed security threats up to 2020.
Methinks the Arctic needs a treaty akin to the Antarctic treaty.

The United States, Norway, Canada and Denmark are challenging Russia’s claim to a section of the Arctic shelf, the size of Western Europe, which is believed to contain billions of tonnes of oil and gas.

An earlier Kremlin document declared the Arctic a strategic resource for Russia and said that development of its energy reserves by 2020 was a vital national objective. It set out plans to establish army bases along the Arctic frontier to “guarantee military security in different military-political situations”.

The strategy published yesterday was approved by President Medvedev and drawn up by the Russian Security Council, which includes the Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, and heads of the military and intelligence agencies.

Bit of background info on Arctic resources

Real threat i guess. Russia have shown (flying the old bears + parades) that they still have a good force avaliable, and with no real alternative to oil at this moment, i could see this happening.

Georgia already happened. It's not going to be a huge surprise when the next target is also energy related.

going to war with Georgia is a bit different from getting the USA, UK and them weird Scandinavian countries involved.

The Georgian conflict was about securing the oil pipeline, this would be no different. The US and UK didn't step in then, Scandinavia may be no different.

I don't think the Americans would be overly enthused about having Russia in the Arctic circle. I mean shit, Palin can already see them.

i seriously doubt russia can actually deliver on those threats though. bears? parades? c'mon, that's just silly.

WW3 will be over oil, there is no doubt in my mind (unless we all have hydrogen cars before the fuel runs out)

Where does hydrogen come from?

electrolysis of water, which needs electricity, which comes from oil and coal, because people are afraid of nuclear power.  Hydrogen or electric cars are a total farce as long as our power comes from coal

There is plenty of coal. It's just terrible for the environment.

Nuclear is good, effecient, "clean" energy. Just have to find a way to get rid of the radioactive waste (maybe plasma burning?)

Gasifying the radioactive compounds doesn't alter the core atom, just the electron cloud, and wouldn't stop radioactive decay.

We need to build fast breeder reactors, hippes be damned

Whats really fucked up is that you have all these countries ranting on to their citizens about saving the world, carbon emissions, footprints etc and how we are all going to have to pay for it, while they are quietly arguing away in the background about who gets the right to deface one of the last relatively unspoilt wildernesses left on the planet.

Man that's weird, I was just reading about a remake of Red Dawn as well

It just seems like more of Russia's recent threats against Europe and North America, akin to 'We don't agree, stop or we make war.'

I need a chart to list the number of times Russia has threatened war in the past ten years.

during the past 15 years there has been stagnation in the development of fast reactors in the industrialized countries that were involved, earlier, in intensive development of this area. All studies on fast reactors have been stopped in countries such as Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States of America and the only work being carried out is related to the decommissioning of fast reactors. Many specialists who were involved in the studies and development work in this area in these countries have already retired or are close to retirement. In countries such as France, Japan and the Russian Federation that are still actively pursuing the evolution of fast reactor technology, the situation is aggravated by the lack of young scientists and engineers moving into this branch of nuclear power.

Must be incredibly hard to control the reaction, I suppose it would work well with a Hydrogen producing plant instead of say, powering the grid where you may have huge load swings. Shit the Ruskies were using one for a desalination plant

Western countries need to move to nuclear power as quickly as possible, let poorer nations fight over fossil fuels.

start up and shutdown processes are difficult to control, yes, but bleeding excess energy to auxiliary plants is already done with nuclear power plants.  decades of stagnant political thought in regard to the plants futures have scared engineers away from the nuclear filed, and now we have none.  gg america

Yeah but, we weren't threatening with nuclear attacks.

And lets not forget that within the past ten years Russia has been involved in Chechnya as well as Georgia and Ossetia.

Nuclear is THE way forward until we get get hydrogen down to a tee - I've been saying it for ages.

Unfortunately, NIMBY attitudes are all too prevalent in the countries that want to research nuclear (France, Germany, UK, USA). and Iran

'Oh no no nuclear please we'll all explode'

'Oh no, no coal, we'll all burn to death'

'Oh no, no wind, it looks ugly'

'Oh no, no hydro, it kills the fishies sea kittens'

Oh no, no solar, it looks ugly and is bad to make'

Fuck 'em all. Do what France does and just stick two fingers up at them and carry on with your energy programme.
