Whackos like attention. The astronauts even get death threats (why I don't know). It's all part of securing the launch area. Their official role is to escort the astronauts to the launch pad.

NASA keeps it on the down low.
Escorted by a helicopter complete with snipers, the astronauts arrived at launch pad 39-A around 11 a.m. this morning to begin loading into Atlantis.
http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:FwN … =firefox-a

Edit: From an older article
Military jet fighters and helicopter gunships kept tabs on a "no-fly zone" set up by the Federal Aviation Administration, a move meant to keep aircraft from cruising within about 35 miles (56 kilometers) of the fully fueled shuttle.

U.S. Coast Guard cutters also patrolled a three-mile (4.8-kilometer) security zone off the coast of Cape Canaveral as well as a normal "launch hazard area" that extended about 65 miles (104 kilometers) northeast of Endeavour's launch pad.

A heavily armed security convoy escorted the shuttle crew to the pad along with a low-flying helicopter with snipers poised on its landing struts. Also apparent: A military Humvee topped with a 50-caliber Gatling gun.

Safety first!

Death threats?! For what? Proving the bible wrong? Pissing in space?

Come to think of it, I remember reading about that a pair of astronauts were ordered to try having sex in space for scientific reasons I don't remember reading any results on it. You don't happen to know anything about this Kmar?

Never mind them having snipers and that, they got helicopters which stay in the air without needing the blades to rotate, thats some clever shit going on.  I wonder when those things will become public knowledge?

Do they call them 'hovercopters'?

1/3200 sec means the shutter on the camera stays open 1/3200th of a second, and f/5.6 means is a measure of how wide the 'light-collecting' bit of the lense is open.
