ANDREW GEOGHEGAN: Well, Tony, early Sunday morning African time it appears that the French chanced upon a group of pirates. There was a mother ship carrying the pirates plus two skiffs.

Now it appears that the pirates mistook this French frigate for a commercial ship - a big mistake as far as they are concerned because the French then managed to launch an attack on the pirates. They launched a helicopter where they fired warning shots and then commandos from the French frigate managed to capture the pirates in their skiffs and then board the mother ship.

So they have 11 pirates captive.

Comment: Two things: 1) The French have a Navy; and 2) French Navy looks like commercial fishing boats?

In the day they had awesome naval battles (Armada, Trafalgar, Copenhagen, Nile) but they lost something in the last century or so. They should have wiped the floor at Jutland but they found out that battlecruisers just plain SUCK. The French had great ships but as a fleet....

maybe because the French navy has a much rust as most commercial shipping?

They (the pirates) probably just saw a "big boat" really far on the Horizon, and just went after it without properly identifying it, only to realise it was a warship when they got closer, but because it was an advanced warship they were detected from far off and were thus captured by the French ship. Throw in some artistic license on behalf of the journalist and you have a story

Yup, the French have a navy, they even have an aircraft carrier. They really were completely useless as a military force after the Napoleon era and it's probably only recently that they've managed to become decent again

Italy have two AC's aswell. You'd be surprised just how small the number of countries there are with carriers, or that are even building carriers. It's mostly the US that just completely kills any other country when it comes to carriers.
