It’s a scenario that could have been lifted from the latest Terminator film. Rob Spence, a Canadian film-maker, has created a fully working wireless video camera, so tiny it can be built imperceptibly into his own prosthetic eye and enable him to make the world’s first genuinely first-person documentary.

Spence will use his invention initially to create a documentary film about surveillance. With the spread of CCTV, not to mention the constant snapping of mobile phone cameras, and even computer programs that allow employers to monitor our every touch of the keypad, he realises his invention could seem like yet another erosion of our privacy.

I presume they haven't figured out a way for him to use it to see? That really would be a breakthrough.

Correct, albeit interfacing a digital camera and the human brain is a more daunting task then just making the digital camera smaller.

The Canadian government could tap into it to see if he's pirating maple syrup.

Yeah, I thought that, but then making a video camera small enough to fit on a glass eye didn't seem like such a big deal.

That eye isn't much good as a bionic eye. More like tiny video camera...
