Civil war was more about states rights then abolition of slavery. Abolitionist movement was a very minor movement throughout that time. Hell, Lincoln didn't really give a shit about the slaves. Only reason there weren't slaves up north was purely economical.

In fact, most of Lincoln's Cabinet and Congress did not want him to issue the Emancipation Proclamation when he did. The primary reason he did was an attempt to swell the ranks of Service-eligible men when the slaves came North. It was not a politically popular move in the North at all.
