Every time a new strain of something rears its ugly head, the press sensationalizes it into the new armageddon. This should keep the rags busy until 2012.

Sweet feathery jesus;

The first case was seen in Mexico on April 13. The outbreak coincided with the President Barack Obama’s trip to Mexico City on April 16. Obama was received at Mexico’s anthropology museum in Mexico City by Felipe Solis, a distinguished archeologist who died the following day from symptoms similar to flu, Reforma newspaper reported. The newspaper didn’t confirm if Solis had swine flu or not.
obama may have been exposed.

Didn't GS say he saw on CNN that Obama was fine?

Then again, what else are they going to tell the public?

In Mexico, about 70 deaths out of roughly 1,000 cases represents a fatality rate of about 7 percent. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19, which killed an estimated 40 million worldwide, had a fatality rate of about 2.5 percent.

That's messed up... hope its just an internet rumor or something.

Oh wait

"The newspaper Reforma reported that President Obama, who recently visited Mexico, was escorted around Mexico’s City’s national anthropology museum on April 16 by Felipe Solis, an archaeologist who died the next day from flu-like symptoms. Mexican officials have not confirmed the cause of death. " New York Times

That really is messed up.

And if you like conspiracies look at the news article in the NT Times and on the left side there is a box of related news... for tomorrow April 26, 2009.

Exactly what I was thinking. I say we wait till 100,000 people are documented with it, then pull out the statistics.  I mean people in Mexico could be particularly susceptible to this strain for whatever reason.

Does this mean I have to stop fucking birds and pigs now?

But seriously...how does it get transmitted from pig/bird to human?

Not really. Two or three samples of 40 or so in size is enough to extrapolate data from. More would lead to more accurate results but for ballpark figures 1000 is more than enough.

Would be nice to see if there were any correlations in that first 1000 people diagnosed other than flu symptoms.

Yeah, but we have to remember other factors. I mean this is mostly in Mexico, if the cases were distributed evenly throughout the world and still showed that death rate then I'd be more accepting.  Sampling from one area (especially one near the equator) about a disease and extrapolating it onto the world is jumping to conclusions imho.

some new reports coming in, over 1600 or more infected, and possible 200 deaths.

it's mexico we are dealing with..they will try to downplay this.

several new cases popping up in US, but still not as serious..but they are Swine flu according to the test.

I think total of 17 cases now in US, plus that stuff in NY

it could have easily spread in NY already..think of the kids who rode the subway to school

the incubation is 3-5 days..then you get suddenly ill. Luckily the strain of swine in the states is less severe than down in mexico.

for now

it's probably going to be a mild event. Luckily in my 2 month survival kit/preps. I have a box of N100 3m mask. They are approved for influenza, and filter down to 0.26 micron. IT's better than nothing.

one thing interesting about this case besides it being a strain with 4 different types..and passing easily from human to human. Is the fact that it seems to be targeting adults 22-40 years old..in good health in Mexico.

same with the spanish flu. It generally killed healhty adults. And was different from most flu that attacks younger children or the elderly

this could be something big either now or next flu season. But let's hope its another non event like SARS and the others

the Spanish flu on another note..killed roughly anywhere from 40 milllion upwards to 90 million..depends on the report you read. They really don't know in the end how many.

and somebody said it had a mortality rate of 2.5%..which is about correct.

if this thing blows up.....man

im hunkerin down this weekend. No bar tonight.

you realize how many Hispanics  are coming over into the states right?

the shit is probably here big time, just hasn't finished incubation

i guess we will find out in the following week or two.

*ok I will edit my post*
