Pakistan's Taliban have seized control of another district in the country's northwest just 70 miles from the capital after consolidating their hold on the Swat valley following a peace deal with the government, according to local government officials and residents.

Oh, Holy Shitstorm.

I give it three months before it is declared that pakistan has collapsed as a state.

Dozens of hooded fighters carrying rocket launchers and machine guns ransacked the offices of international aid and development agencies working in the district and took away their vehicles. Some employees of the agencies were also briefly taken hostage. The militants set up their headquarters in Buner town after driving out government officials.

The Taliban have banned music and television and stopped women from entering into a popular shrine of a Muslim saint. They are also using mosques to invite local youth to join them.

A Taliban commander said Islamic Sharia courts would soon be established in the district as they have already done in Swat. Mohammad Khalil said the main objective was to end the "sense of deprivation" among locals and provide speedy justice to the people.
Also in local news; grass is being mowed in local stadiums so public executions mandated by sharia law be kept tidy.

I'd say bomb the lot of them, but as far as I know, the current arsenal only allows for bombing people back to the stone age, and they seem to already be there. Our weapons are useless!

I lol'd at both posts. Stone age was a time before metallurgy. One cannot bomb the common knowledge of metallurgy out of a people unless you bomb all of said people.

Perhaps when the Taliban raids the government buildings in Islamabad, the Pakistani government will start doing something effective militarily.

Surprise surprise the Taliban don't honour the peace/surrender terms and decide to go for another slice of the pie. Meh, despite the fact that thousands of their soldiers have already died fighting the Taliban, I think it's pretty safe to say these guys actually want the Taliban to take over their country. The only reason this shit is happening is because they are letting it happen, any other country it would be a different story. But I'm guessing nowadays most people in that country actually agree with them.

I was listening to the radio about two months ago. They were interviewing people in pakistan about development and growth in Karachi. The developer was saying how he would like to develop this busy corner or that busy corner, but the corners were already bought by Islamic radicals who have been infiltrating into the south and apparently they have been taking over land at strategc points and building bunker type structures.

Only a matter of time before Pakistan has to clear out the Taliban or get taken over.

Second, do you really think its that simple ? From what people have been saying in this thread, the Pakistani population wants them there.

Thirdly, Pakistan ant no "I-RAQ" or Afghanistan, it would be plain stupid for them to go to war with Pakistan hence why all the moneyzzzz.

The money we've been throwing at Pakistan is mostly for development.  We've been doing it for decades now.  The amounts we've spent in recent years are considerably more than we spent in the past, but if you notice, most of that money is concentrated in the big cities.

There's a vast difference between the average urban Pakistani and the average rural one.  The urban Pakistanis are much more Westernized and not as connected to terror.

So, you are correct that if we bombed the shit out of their big cities (like Karachi), it would be a waste of our aid money.

If we bomb the shit out of remote regions led by extremists, it would be beneficial.  The question is whether or not the Pakistani government would be willing to strike a deal with us.  Given the right situation, I think they would.

Pakistan has one of the top 10 best equipt military's in the world, as for trained they are not. What can and should be offered is training to the army and police

So basically the Taliban are invading regions of Pakistan, driving out the inhabitants, and taking hostages, all the while the Pakistani Government does nothing?

I find that hard to believe. Perhaps there are numerous threats being dealt out by the Taliban preventing the Pakistani's from making any surgical strike against them.

I am though, assuming there are major hostage situations, and the Pakistani government actually cares about that.

I've always said that you'll probably have to wait until the Taliban start attacking the proper/populated regions until they MIGHT start treating them seriously. So far the Taliban have only had a few attacks in the main cities/regions but you'll just have to wait until they've done taking over the tribal/mountain/rural regions and then see what happens from there

What needs to happen is the ISI needs to be cleaned out. That is where the bulk of the supporters for the Taliban are in the Pakistani govt. Unfortunately, that is the part they most need to properly target these knuckleheads.

If they clear out the idiots in the ISI, and then focus their efforts on destroying the Taliban before they can infiltrate the urban areas in any measurable way, it's a win-win for them: getting rid of a destabilizing group and proving to India that they can operate effectively, thus contributing to deterring a conflict in the Kashmir region.
