Soft Copy vs Hard Copy Games.

The concept of online soft copies of games for me is a very great idea, and has interested me ever since it's release. The concept of easily being able to download the game by simply logging into your account is a huge plus for my lazy, loose everything nature.

But with this concept, problems arise. For example, if steam was to go bankrupt, and their servers go down, where does it leave us.

What are your views?

I like the concept, Steam is really the only decent supplier so far, and it fucks me off something chronic when you cant play a cunting game because their servers are down for maintenance, would it kill them to have a secondary server to switch to while one is being maintined?

Also I know a few people who have lost games from Steam too, they got them back eventually but it was a lot of hassle. I'd prefer it if you just paid to download an iso of the retail disc, you can either mount it and run it as it is or burn it to a DVD for safety, they could even supply you with cover art so you can make the box. Seems like a far more sensible idea to me, DRM would be an issue with it but, I'm sure it's not that difficult to secure a downloaded iso to the same standard they secure a retail DVD copy.

Mounting drives = hug holes for security with safedisc etc.

they have a good system now, but maybe a network of servers, like how they do the updates, form servers near you... etc.

Also, it  shits me when my net is down, and i cant play crysis, cause i cant logon to steam...

Cloud computing is a huge new market looming on the not too distant horizon. It brings with it some huge pros and some pretty big cons. It would be very handy not needing a super-duper graphics card or sound card to indulge in high quality gaming but, like you say, what happens when the server goes down. Theoretically, in terms of software applications too, cloud computing could provide a solution to mass ownership of pirated programs (though I'm sure pirates and hackers would find a way around this). Bandwidth would have to be pretty fecking good too for it to be practical. Also, we're not quite at the stage technology-wise where heavy, high-end video editing could be done via clouds, it still takes an aeon doing renders using a render farm never mind over a broadband connection.

Hate it. Was one of the major, main, only reason I didn't buy EF or AF. I want my games to come on some type of physical storage device (aka a DVD) I can hold. I want them to come with a separate manual printed on paper and I want the ability to play games without having to be connected to the internet.

Hard copy.

I want all of my games, music, movies, and documents backed up, I have little faith in my own hard drive, and none in the company servers, in the event of a crash, I'd have to buy everything again.

There was a massive outrage last year when FM2009 came out via steam

Myriad of problems: too many people downloading at once, installed then could not connect to servers, bugs, etc.

No thanks.
