Keep your daughter living with you in a massive slum with restricted access to fresh water, no real sewage system, no education beyond what you can provide, worrying about her next meal...
Or...
Do a deal that will get you, your other children and your wife out of the slum and into some relatively decent housing and get your daughter a proper education in a western country with fresh, running water, decent housing, good food and access to healthcare...
I'd find that a bastard of a decision to make once it occurred to me.

Extreme poverty would be the motivating factor I guess, I'm not saying that makes it right though... could just be a publicity stunt to highlight how the people who starred in this multi-million grossing movie got shafted and are still living in abject poverty.

Why was it that Slumdog Millionaire was such a Muslim based.....cast/characters? The main guy was Muslim, half the cast seem to be Muslim. It doesn't make any sense. And the only reason it won so many damn Oscars was because of the attacks on Mumbai a few months earlier.

It just seems like a grossly inaccurate representation in terms of demographics, I dunno. I just don't see why they had to go down the whole minority route for a film that's supposed to represent so much

Since the 1960s a rather nationalist group has been gaining power and took control of the area in the 1980s I think. Part of why Bombay was renamed. There is violence there. Anybody who doesn't assimilate into the local people's customs and cultures faces real trouble with street gangs and in dealing with the local government. The philosophy of the party is that they are all Indian first but their local culture is superior to the other regional cultures of India and if you move to the area you must assimilate.
Maybe the writer just took a bit of artistic licence with the violence.
