n the fortnight since the G20 protests in London, the Guardian has received video footage from a number of people that appears to show police using excessive force or questionable tactics in dealing with demonstrators and the press.

The best-known video was sent by a New York fund manager early last week. It shows Ian Tomlinson, who was attempting to return home on the evening of the first day's protests, on 1 April, being pushed to the ground by a police officer.

Here is a list of the footage received over this period, displayed in chronological order according to when the events took place. The Guardian is passing newly obtained footage to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, with the permission of those who shot the films.

Note: Most of the video footage contains violence, and one includes swearing.
why do people not move away when there's someone with a baton shouting "GET BACK". geeez, he's gone fuking clobber you and then you'll cry police brutality.

That slap was OTT but the police officer who did it got suspended.

The police are obviously being told to crush descent. Not the sort of policing that right minded UK citizens want.

The Police have developed the tactic of 'kettling'.
Block protesters into an area, or totally surround them, with fully armed riot police.
Keep them there for 8-10 hours, anyone who moves get punched, batonned and arrested.

Its obvious the Met Police have been directed to beat people up to discourage future protest.
Right now they are heading in the direction of Hitler's Brownshirts.

When it comes to the right-wingers on this forum It won't matter how much video footage or evidence you present documenting heavy-handed tactics by the security services, they will always presume a just cause on the part of the policeman/soldier and aggravation on the part of the protestor. Maybe it's because there are so many ex-military types among them, or because so many of them are security services fanboys with aspirations of having a job one day that warrants the carrying of a firearm, who knows? Many even share the Nixon attitude i.e. when the security services do it, that means it's not illegal!

Seriously though, more and more compelling evidence is coming to light that suggests that this macho, heavy-handed attitude is an endemic problem among the security services. The clip where that big cop slapped the woman across the face and then hit her with a stick when she appeared to ask him why was ridiculous.

A guy who was in such bad health that he died of a heart attack moments later was shoved to the ground by the police despite facing in the opposite direction to the police, having his hands in his pockets and showing no aggression whatsoever... that's not just shitty policing, it's common assault. It also doesn't look too good when big macho cops are slapping small women across the face and hitting them with sticks when they're not doing anything particularly offensive.

These cases involve normal law-abiding members of the public, not tree-hugging anarchists who are randomly trashing public and private property. I dunno, I guess some people think its cool for the cops to bully members of the public who aren't doing anything wrong.

Hot off the press...

G20 death was not heart attack

"A new post mortem says Ian Tomlinson died from an abdominal haemorrhage not a heart attack after contact with police during the G20 protests. The statement from the City of London Coroners Court overturns the initial assessment that the newspaper seller died of natural causes. Mr Tomlinson was hit and pushed over by a police officer on 1 April."
