British Police Release Terror Suspect; Pakistan Demands More Info
British police have cleared the youngest of 12 men arrested in connection with what officials call a "very big" terrorist plot.

Police say the 18-year-old was released without charge Saturday and is now being questioned by British immigration officials.

Meanwhile, a court ruling is giving police another week to interrogate the other suspects, most of them Pakistanis in Britain on student visas.

Police detained the men Wednesday in a series of raids across northwestern England and continue to search 10 sites in Manchester, Liverpool and Lancashire.

British authorities have not released details of the alleged plot but secret documents photographed by the media before the raids show authorities suspect the it was linked to al-Qaida.

Pakistan's interior minister said Saturday that Pakistan wants to verify the identity of the suspects.

Rehman Malik told reporters Pakistan wants to bring the culprits to justice, especially if they had any ties to al-Qaida.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown telephoned Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari this past week to discuss terrorist threats from Pakistan.  Mr. Brown said Thursday that Pakistan needs to do more to handle the threat.

Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, said Friday that his country is doing all it can to deal with the terrorist threat and that it is Britain that needs to do more.

Britain's Home Office said Friday that all foreign students are closely investigated -- including checking their fingerprints -- before being issued student visas.  The office said those procedures have been tightened recently.

The security lapse forced police to act on their investigation earlier than they had planned and prompted the resignation of Britain's top counter-terrorism officer.

Britain says it has foiled two major bomb attacks since July of 2005, when attacks on London's transit system killed 52 people.  Authorities said all of the plots had links to Pakistan.

hhhhmmmmmm i knew a few would be released, due to the arrests being rushed into due to the blunder.

Pakistan has one of the best militarise in the world, last time i checked they were in the top 10 best equipt. same cannot be said about best trained.

Pakistan's army needs training to handle the issue of terrorism, they have the equipment but not the correctly trained army

The blunder is the irresponsibility o the mediaf publicizing documents they apparently knew had sensitive information on them. Yes I know the govt official should not have had the documents in the open, I get that, however it was a mistake. The breach of national security the media performed was on purpose. I hope it is the news room that gets blown up because of it.

In fact, arrests should be made of the people in the media responsible for this, charged witrh treason.

I wasn't aware that ANY media outlet had publicized the contents of the document. Making shit up?

Or are you just suggesting that they deserve execution (which is your implication) just for being there?

Publication is what you're missing. The photographs have not been published.

I am not excusing the security offical here, he has owned up to what he did and resigned for it. What more can he do?

The media could not wait to:

1. publiish this information

2. make GB's security community look like a bunch of fools to our enemies.

Like I said, treason

Pakistan just needs a serious kick up the arse and a reality check. They say they know they have problems (at times) but seem totally uncommitted to do anything about it. It almost seems like they stick their fingers in their ears, close their eyes and hum away until things die down a little.

Except that they DID WAIT to publish the information.

Making public officials look like fools is what the media do best, why should they stop now?

They would not have, they couldn't wait to publish it.

This release before or after, does nothing for this fght. A mistake was made, and the media loved reporting the mistake to our enemies. TREASON.

I don't think there's a case for treason, i think you have to murder the queen/heirs to throne to get that. Not sure.

Anywho, a news company is in the business to make money through news, and to do that you have to find some pretty drastic news. They succeded in that at least. While it may have posed a threat to national security, the blunder happened, the raids happened, the bombs were averted and so all is well.

Lessons most definitly need to be learned, but running around screaming for peoples heads on a platter isn't going to solve anything.

The treason verdict does not lie in the outcome, it lies in the actions of the media. Just because no one got hurt and the plot was folied does not mean the actions of the newspapers were not treasonous.  You saying it would have only been treason if the raids failed and cops were killed, I say it is treason regardless, the media is guilty of the same action whether someone got hurt or not. I am guessing the media is probably disappointed it went so well

It has absolutely nothing to do with treason.

If the media had published the picture and not kept the details secret until they were cleared for publication, then they would have likely faced charges for breach of the Official Secrets Act. As it stands they had permission to make these details public under the terms of the act regarding the declassfication of matierial prior to publication.

it is obviously true that pakistan is the hub of terrorism in the world.....yet the government of pakistan never seems to recognise it......remember how it denied the links to pakistan of the mumbai bombers?

if pakistan is reluctant to help britain with the pakistani problem it is right and proper to stop allowing pakistani ''students'' to study in britain

odd that they want to when so many pakistanis reisdent in britain find such fault with the country they chose to move to....
