I think I would have looked for a fire extinguisher.
If it's a CO2 or a powder extinguisher, you can freeze his face or blind him/make him cough respectively.
(A water or a foam extinguisher wouldn't do such a good job.)

I stopped a guy who was raping a woman and she refused to press charges. The DA pressed charges though because I was a witness and his glasses were left at the scene of the crime. He went to prison.
I believe this implies we need a greater police presence in subways, and more security cameras will be necessary as well.
