So bf2s this story made me think exactly what rights do animals have?

Monmouth man charged with abandoning white rabbit
He didn't want it anymore and let it go. So he was charged with a crime and faces a 2 Grand fine. I don't understand how letting an animal free that has no ability to hurt anyone else be a crime considering that he could have eaten it if he wanted to.
So anyway to what extent do animals have rights? Should they be considered our equals or are they just for food and entertainment? Also if a tasty animal like chickens somehow developed the ability to speak and are able to hold a conversation with us; should we still eat them?
