i've got 180 hours on engi and the guide is not bad.  will have to disagree whole heartedly about the weapons.  the jackhammer is not an amateur weapon.  the one shot kill with pump action shotgun is nice but if you don't get him with the first shot then you're pretty screwed.  the jackhammer will gaurantee you a victory in most close quarter encounters.

also, an engineer isn't meant to engage in infantry combat.  if you must, stay hidden and in enclosed spaces and try to ambush the enemy with your superiority in close quarters.  don't be out in the open.  this is why i think the mp7 is crap.  while it does give you range over the shotguns, if you're in a situation where you need the range then you're missing the point of being an engineer.  at medium-long range you'll be at a severe disadvantage to every other class cause they got much sweeter guns than you.  so if you're an engineer and find yourself in a situation where you need to fire at a distance, pick up someone else's kit!  mp7 is useless.

in any case being an engineer is about armor combat.  unless you're riding around in a tank or apc, you're much better off in another class.  at mines are easily spotted cause most roads are light colored and will cause you way too many tk's (if its turned on).  i've given up on strategical mining cause it always seems that a humvee of teammates will find it before an enemy tank.  any experience armor whore knows how to stay clear of AT mines.  I very rarely get killed by em.  So if the weapons are that great, the mines aren't great then why be an engineer?  Because you can repair...enough said.

MP7 feels like a chainsaw! I prefer the Jackhammer. If nothing else, it scares the 'bejesus' out of me, when it fires.

There's nothing wrong with self healing as a eng. I think you were a little off on that one. It's good to always be eng because often in tank fights both tanks will die. Often your own tank will go red after you win and you can have your wrench out to save it from blowing. I've done that countless times. Hell I've done it in the attack helo. Land quick, save yourself via wrench.

mp7 is not useless at all. It's just preference really. I love using the mp7 and just going infantry. Medium to long range it sucks but that's not what its made for. You still gotta be close like you would for a shotgun. And because it has 40 rounds you can do a lot more killing per reload, unlike shotguns.

It should take 2 shots to kill someone with the Jackhammer, but I've died so many times because it takes 3-4 and I do only 2. Its really annoying, so you will usually end up killing on with 4 shots, and then try to get another with 3, and switch to pistol to kill them.
You can one-shot kill some one with the Jackhammer, but you have to be point blank to ensure that all of the lead shot hits them.  The Jackhammer has the biggest spread of all the shotguns in the game so it is not very effective at more than 5 meters.  The Dao seems to have the narrowest spread for a little more distance (10 meters).  I love shot gun killing sprees.  Stand over an un-suspecting sniper and let loose.

MP7 is fun because it feels like a jacked up PKM without the power.  I am diggin the US shotty right now.  The other day I got 5 kills in 4 shots with it.  2 guys came around the corner and one shell put em both down.  I think the Jackhammer is pretty much equal to the MEC shotgun.  They both fire fast, but usually take 2-4 hits to kill.

Engineer is quickly becoming my favorite class.

Good hints all around, add in some humor and make the format a little simpler and you'll have a good guide m8, add in a few pics and along with that and you got a winner.  That said, you have some good points in there, and it is nice to see more engineers.  :-)

The hint of jumping out and using the shotgun on c4 throwers is a bad idea in my mind.  Usually you end up chasing the guy around the tank/apc and the moment you pop out most decent players will jump in and get some range to blow your brains out.  Thus, I rather go down with the vehicle, on maps like karkand the one thing you do not want is the enemy to steal your armor & then start going in armor convoys.

As for the Mk3A1 it is a highly effective shotgun and does kill when 7 of the 8 contact the enemy at the same time, against armoed opponents it requires 2 blasts.  Now add in the high spread and recoil it does tend to require 2-3 hits.  However that is only if you aim for the body, similar to CS:S you need to aim for the head with shotguns, even if only one round of the 8 hits the head, it brings them down to 55 health regardless.  Add in that you have 7 more magnum pellets that may hit, and the fact that it is an auto and you have great chance of finishing them off.

Furthermore, the pump shotties are very finicky weapons, against a prone opponent at close/medium distance the spread may only injure your opponent and the second round takes too long to effectively rely on, especially when you can't jump and fire.  In such cases, the auto is more reliable.  That said much of it comes down to play style.

As for the Mp7, it is still the best SMG and I highly recommend using it on levels like Wake Island, just make sure to use it "run & gun style" at close/medium range.

I know what you mean; I had to work my ass off just to get Basic Engineer, and I always thought Veteran would be impossible.

Then along came the EF map Operation Smoke Screen. Go engineer and jump in a tank (there are loads of them!). Always try to keep your tank close to other tanks. Destroy any supply crates on sight!

Option two is to get in a buggy and hoon around from one damaged tank to another. I got my Veteran on this map with a combination of these strategies. Obviously if you can get in a squad and all be tank-whoring engies it would be even easier.

Go for it!

Ha, although now I look at your sig and see you've already got it. Well there you go.
