If you live alone, or only with other responsible adults, loaded is ok I guess. I have younhins' about and keep the ammo within reach and the rifle within 5 seconds away. I also have practiced grabbing the ammo and gun then loading and chambering.
I live in a split level and have to go down a long hall to get anywhere else in the house. If my house gets invaded/robbed, I have options. Otherwise I guess I could just burst out my room in my underwear and yell at them for a bit.
