Apart from the fact I live in a big city, arguably the most dangerous in Australia and don't know one person who would even consider the need to carry a gun or any other type of 'personal protection' makes a lot of Americans who believe this to be the case overly paranoid or there is a 'real' problem where they live. Also due to the fact you don't 'prepare' for any other just as unlikely yet still possible situations should make you wonder why you have decided the need to carry/own a gun over everything else?
This isn't a discussion about carrying weapons, it's about people who have them at home. I can't speak to the gun control laws in your area but they are somewhat overall in the US. Thus, many owners. According to
this, taken with some salt, that hits around 39%. Entirely accurate or not, the error margin would have to be horrendous for the truth to be over half, let alone a stark majority. Simply put, not as many people own guns in the US as you imagine.
In fact, that's only owning them. That ~39% also includes recreational shooters, hunters, etc. Those that own a gun for self defense represent an even smaller category, let alone the number that sleep with one next to their bed. Your notion that America is generally paranoid is ridiculous.
If you don't mind me clarifying your last question, are you actually saying that a mass chemical gassing is more likely then a home invasion? Come on, that's bullshit. Each of your disasters is possible, but the possibility of a home invasion is far greater then a bomb or chemical outbreak. All of your 'preparations' are also far more intrusive then owning a gun.
