WASHINGTON DC – Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters.

According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.

Despite having a $32 million budget, PETA does not operate an adoption shelter. PETA employees make no discernible effort to find homes for the thousands of pets they kill every year.

I'd also like to add that PETA are dealing with stray animals that are often neglected and unable to be placed into adaption because they are wild, such as feral cats.

And $32 million would be coming from where? Charity. The organisation is a non for profit, tax exempt, corporation with 187 employees, funded almost entirely by its members (according to Wiki, but you should've known most of that).

It's not like they are taking tax payers money and then going around killing animals for the heck of it. Geez. Do you really think that is what is happening?

I can't believe you are attacking PETA, Seriously?

The animals they put down are the ones nobody wants to adopt. They work with saving animals on factory farms, in laboratories, and in the clothing trade. Not exactly the average pet store variety of animal.

You work with animals, you of all people should know the numbers of animals which get put down simply because nobody adopts them.

Let's try this out, say really did kill 95 Percent of Adoptable Pets in its Care During 2008.

As an animal worker yourself, do you think more than 5% of the animals PETA rescues were adoptable or would have been adopted.

Remember they do work on battery farms, zoos and let's face it who wants to adopt a few thousand dying chickens?

i dont know their process. we dont put animals down because they arent adopted. only if there is something wrong medically (cancer, aids, etc) or they are a danger to people.

I saw this on Penn&Teller's Bullshit! a year or two ago. It's true. PETA is scary. They also figured out how they are killing the animals... They freeze them out in a giant walk in freezer.

I am outraged the PETA treats animals in this way, even though before when I heard stories about PETA I used to mock them and talk about how I don't give a shit about animals and how PETA should be called People for the Eating of Tasty Animals, but no, today, today I am outraged at PETA for they have gone against my Animal loving ethos for which I suddenly am after reading this article about PETA.

I clicked a few links in the articles. It seems they were talking about ONLY cats and dogs that you'd see in the pet store.

With an overpopulation of pets, I would think Genetic Researchers could release a virus that would reduce the change of conception into the pet population (transmittable)...then when you wanted your pet to have puppies/kittens you goto the Vet and get the vaccine.

PETA VS SPCA adoption numbers are brutal. SPCA's have something like 70-80% adoption rates. PETA has a 95% kill rate, or 5% adoption rate.

It sickens me to think that they "save" animals from shelters only to kill them bc they think its a mercy kill. I hate PETA and always will
