So...people want to legalize pot. fine. but, here is a question. if pot were set at whatever price, and then the govt kept increasing the tax on it...would you continue to but it legally? or buy it underground? the reason i ask is because booze and tobacco have seen many increases, yet there is no real underground for it. (moonshine yes but that is not a nationwide market.)
Depends on how much the tax is and the quality of the weed. Personally, if it were legal I'd grow my own.
I smoke regularly but I've never bought my own. I imagine if it were legalized that every once in a while I might buy my own and smoke it if I felt like it or if there were other people who wanted to smoke but none of us had any. However, I'd probably just let my roommates (or whoever else) keep buying it wherever they want.
^ agree. Except for me, as soon as I get my own place, I plan on growing regardless of the legality of it. I wouldn't deal, and growing without intent to distribute is only a misdemeanor and it'd be (hopefully) hard to get caught anyway.Wreckognize wrote:

There is an underground trade of tobacco. I don't smoke very often and by the time it's legal I'll be 21 and will have way too much going on in my life to smoke weed. I still would love to legalize and tax it.
But honestly if I were a major pot user I would buy it through the underground if it was higher quality or cheaper. NJ taxes on cigarettes are making me want to start ordering in bulk online. $7.00+ for a pack of 20 is absurd.

Pot, pot, pot. Get marlboro and camel start turning out pot ciggies, and the majority of pot users would smoke that shit.

In Holland its legal to smoke it but illegal to cultivate it (correct me if I'm wrong)Wreckognize wrote:

Even if it's illegal in theory, it seems that it's not enforced.Wikipedia wrote:
Cultivation and wholesale of cannabis is likewise "tolerated" in small amounts (guidelines here are no more than five plants at home or the possession of 5 grams per adult max.).
I need around tree fiddy.
I guess if it were made legal then the black market would perish. Or at least that's what the government should try and do. So it would then be like everything really... you'd only get small quantities sold behind the govt's back.

If it were legal the price would drop from what it is atm anyway.

Like the massive tax increases on tobacco, I'd quit.
But also, there is no underground tobacco market.

Indeed. We can assume that the taxed price would then be at similar levels to current pricing.AussieReaper wrote:

As for the quality of the product, I'm sure the entrepreneurs that would venture into this hypothetical market would introduce alternatives to the consumers instead of giving them one single watered down choice of joint. Au contraire, I think we'd see a wide selection of pre-rolled / loose packets with different strengths, flavors and effects (indica/sativa). A consumer would always know what he/she is getting too.
If decriminalized, I'd probably mess about with growing my own as a hobby as well as purcahsing state controlled and taxed weed. People make their own wines too.

Hard to tax something that can be grown in everyones home.

Home wine/beer sets can be bought from a Kwik E Mart, but I prefer to get a bottle of Chilean from the store instead.Kmarion wrote:

Who here grows their own tobacco?

Can't you grow tobacco at home if you want in the USA?Kmarion wrote:

Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.
You could but treating it to make it smokeable would be a hassle.Flecco wrote:

In your home? ..lol. Two entirely different plants. You're going to need a little more than your standard pot growing kit. Not to mention pot heads are so used to rolling and smoking their own (bongs etc..)... it'd be fucking moronic to go to the "kwik e mart" (which would inevitably lead to another price markup) and pay someone else to do it for them. This would still be an out of the garage operation, just with less risk.. like selling boiled peanuts and seafood on the side of the road. A guy can dream cant he?Flecco wrote:

If tax became an issue then I'd grow my own, its a lot easier compared to brewing your own liquour, or growing/prepping your own tobacco. When you don't have to worry about the legality of it, growing your own is easy peasy - its quite a hardy plant.

I'll write it off as an R&D expenseKmarion wrote:

There's a black-market in tobacco and alcohol in the UK, but only because we're a small island and a day trip to mainland Europe gives one the chance to buy loads at half the UK full-tax price.
I would expect the same would happen with weed were it legalised here.
Oh, and I'd probably buy it from all available sources.

Herein lies the problem with decriminalization + taxing, you need to hope that people will be lazy enough to buy from you instead of growing it themselves, but that's a problem if they already do so. You'd need to have even worse penalties from growing/distribution in decriminalized land than you have now in order to push some of the growers out of the market so that people will actually buy it legal and pay the taxes.
They seem not to have that problem in Holland.DesertFox- wrote:
