Just got to one of the freaky paranoia bits in Deus Ex. Running around in Paris hiding from MJ12 (the bad guys) and I ran up to one of the public news terminals and was flicking through the topics and saw one called READ ME.

That the first one or the second one? Deus Ex 2 = shit compared to no. 1.

And yes you do die pretty easily at first. You'll always die fast against the giant assault bots so you have to set traps/engage from a distance but the little patrol bots/urban combat mechs get easy later on with some explosives/sneak past. As you go through the game your dude can become a ghost/invincible juggernaut of death or anything in between.

Basically you play the game you want as far as completing the missions. Stealth works. Rampage works. You can get through most of the game by only killing under 10 people. Or you can kill everybody.
