Besides, the last thing you want in this economical climate is people spending less.
Less demand = lower price.

Why would people pay more for something that isn't in demand.

Look at gold and diamonds. Actually OIL. Look at OIL

When the economy is good and more people want and can afford it (demand) the price goes up. Now the economy is crashing and everything but oil is falling through the floor. FUCKING OIL

That's only some things. Look at software, when specialist software is made for a small audience, it costs thousands.

High end PC components cost a lot to develop, if they aren't selling the prices will go up, and then eventually the developers will go out of business.

Dumb idea tbh. Cloud computing is cool but this sort of system is practical only in countries with awesome broadband infrastructure.

Thats more to do with cost of production and the fact they have no competition.

Yeah I saw this on Gametrailers, I really like the idea, but unless you don't have a fast internet speed i don't see it working 100% well.
But still, i cannot wait to see how it works.

I think they're missing something.People like to own things, I like to know that I own my console, games etc. With this if they dont want to host a game any more you cant play it. In 10 years time Ill be able to play my PS3/2/1 and I like that. With this its more of a risk.

Also wonder what would happen if they had a power cut where the servers are.. I cant play any more? This whole idea just centralises risk.

This is going to fail.

Wait till they have a few million users all connected at once. Epic lag, epic fail. And what happens if a server goes down? That's a large group of pissed off gamers.

Oh, and then the fact that you have to play the game the way the server wants you to play it.

Sorry, I think I'll keep my PC.

Imagine if the market is segmented, you get the cable industry, the phone companies and all the like. There were already some kind of gaming in the cable industry before but it was shitty games.  They have the power, I think, to localise players in a smaller area by ping detection.  Lag is reduced.  If you want to play with your buddy at the other end of the country then go PC.

I read the article in diagonal but they were mentioning about PCs and Macs, you would still be localized but you could try a game before to buy it PC or play with your cousin, brother or best real life friend that's at the other end of the city.  Subway, McDonald's, Tim Horton, Sears, Coke & etc all have their local stores and how do you call that, concession, I think.  Servers would be in proximity, that could work.

Hardcore gamer would still be hanging to their PCs while the mass of non addicted gamers are still legion.  You buy the game, you own it and you don't pay more for it, unless like WOW and the like.

The question is, can this be self sustaining with the none console/PC people mass that don't want to invest much?

For the mouse and keyboard, what about a USB plug in the controler that will connect, lets say, a light mouse and a mini z-board?

It depends realy how they want to implement.  I think, IMHO, that the scenario I've explained can work.

Edit: spelling

Sounds like a very kick ass idea. For some reason in reminds me of that console that was meant to come out that could literally play everything.

Just saw the video of the press conference.
It showed them playing it online on software that was still being produced. It looked epic and I could not see much lag. And this will probably get ironed out once its fully developed. Only thing is I don't know if Sony or Microsoft would release their exclusive games such as God of War, Killzone, Gears of War , Halo etc.

This is another possible opportunity for non-physical services/information to be traded overseas as labor. If they require servers/individual PCs to process games for people online..why not outsource to where server management is cheaper.

Exactly, they really couldn't give a shit if there is input lag, as the casual gamer won't notice, and people will eventually get use to the (potential) lag.  They're trying to start a new generation of games, but TBH I don't we need/want a new generation yet.

I'd consider this whole ordeal a beta test, just to see if the system has the potential to work.

My main problem with the whole thing is not so much lag but quota.

Internet quota size is small for me as i live in Australia and i'm poor. I see streaming 720p video or higher as something that would eat through my quota incredibly quickly. So i imagine it would affect others.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

500kB/s? I WISH. This was one of the problems I saw, in England there's no such thing as unlimited internet plans, most of the ones that claim it have ridiculous bandwidth limits (usually 35GB or less). Also unless you're in a major city you can expect between 1mb and 8mb download speeds only - usually towards the 1mb.

I can't see this working here.

Nonsense.

I have unlimited downloads and get 24Mb/1.3Mb down/up (well, that's what's advertised - it's more like 12Mb/1.25Mb in practice). There is a fair usage policy of course - but considering I download between 300-600GB/month, they can't be very strict about it.

Also, using clever lossless compression (or very low loss), you can get decent streaming 720p content over a normal connection.
