Afghan Convert May Be Unfit for Trial

Yeah, and the Western World is the intollerant one. The penalty for converting to Christianity in Afghanistan is death? We're not talking about an extremist muslim group here, we are talking about an entire country and it's laws.

I think they realize how much attention this case is getting. They are going to declare him mentally unfit to stand trial, and deport him. That way they don't piss off their people, and they don't kill him, which would anger pretty much the entire non-muslim world.

Either that or they are trying to save face amongst other muslims who might listen to what he has to say.  If he is declared "mentally ill" he will be much less credible.

Watch "enemy of the state" to see a good movie on issues of credibility. (vg movie too)

Welcome to the Taliban fundamentalist theocracy...this is what happens when religion controls the government.

Fundies require no exceptions to the rules in their dogma.

Well... The US pretty much destroyed 95% of the Taliban so I dont think they made up this rule anyways...

"Islamic law" = theocratic laws.  Though they have been removed from power, Afghanistan remains in a radical Islamic state.

Underlying message = Religion in America is evil too, you will be controlled like them if you support Bush. Free your mind, become an atheist. if it feels good, do it. Don't let people tell you anything you do is wrong.

Had to bring this one back up to the top. All the pressure the US and other countries have put on Afghanistan, and it looks like the judge isn't buckling to the pressure. Anyone else have nay new stuff on the topic?

The last I saw on the news was that the Judges were going to render a decision in two months.  Given that the world has a very short attention span & memory that's mroe than enough time to let the focus swing away and they can do as they wish.  The message from Georgie-Boy to Kharzai was "WTF?  I put you in power to bring freedom of learning , religion, etc.  Sacrificed 250 young souls and now you allow this crap?"

I have not heard of Kharzai's response.

Well, most of Afghanistan is still ruled under the Taliban rules, plus the real "government leaders/enforcers" are Warlords.

Yea, and this is proof that Islam is a violant religion.  Think of how may deaths we would have in the US, if we killed people who did not belive in Chrisianity (say what you want, the US was built upon Christian idaea and laws)?  It is also proof that Islam is a religion that does not what to share the religious spotlight.

It's only violent in it's fundamental state, as are all western religions.

The US was not built on Christian ideas provide proof? If it was I don't belive that there would be a seperation of church and state?

Snippets from the latest news wire:

KABUL, Afghanistan - The chief judge trying an Afghan man who faces a possible death sentence for converting from Islam to Christianity defended the court's autonomy Friday amid reports the man could be freed.

Senior clerics in the Afghan capital have voiced strong support for prosecuting Rahman and again warned Friday they would incite people to kill him unless he reverted to Islam.

Ansarullah Mawlavi Zada, the chief among three judges trying the case, asserted the autonomy of the court.

"We have constitution and law here. Nobody has the right to put pressure on us," he told the AP.

Senior clerics condemned Rahman as an apostate.

Rahman had "committed the greatest sin" by converting to Christianity and deserved to be killed, cleric Abdul Raoulf said in a sermon Friday at Herati Mosque.

"God's way is the right way, and this man whose name is Abdul Rahman is an apostate," he told about 150 worshippers.

Another cleric, Ayatullah Asife Muhseni, told a gathering of preachers and intellectuals at a Kabul hotel that the Afghan president had no right to overturn the punishment of an apostate.

He also demanded that clerics be able to question Rahman in jail to discover why he had converted to Christianity. He suggested it could have been the result of a conspiracy by Western nations or Jews.

And the bottom line is......... it's none of our business. If I came into your house and told you that your not doing things right wouldn't you get pissed? If that man wantted to convert he should have left the place where he knew it was illegal. Much like the U.S. there are alot of laws that don't make sense but it's up to the people to make the change not an other country that has different belifes.  I myself think that it sucks for this guy to die because of his conversion, but I'm much more worried about my own freedoms in america.

Alright I've been listing to you spit your dogma in various topics for two days now, and I am deciding to speak out for the sake of balance. Your sweeping general statements are a bit to much to take. My question to you is, when did Jesus tell his followers to use violence on his behalf? A Christian is simply a follower of The Christ, a disciple. You can't throw Christ's disciples into the same pail as violent religious extremreists. If they are vile and divisive people then they are clearly not following Jesus.

a side note-

People don't counterfeit fake money, they counterfeit things that are truly valuable. The same goes for Christianity. There are many counterfeit Christians, eg. our President. When is the last time you saw a counterfeit atheist? You won't because atheism is worthless, yes even unlivable. My point is that the actions and words of people do not change what scripture says, God's word stays constant. It always has and it always will.

Spank, so what if christians got so counterfited that none of the practicing realigions are true to form anymore?? Do you go to church?

As I've been saying, religion is the catalyst for said "counterfeiters" to run amok with their agendas.  Afghanistan was and is ruled by radical fundamentalist Islamic law, and there are people here in America that are trying to give christianity a full strong-hold in the political arena such as the christian coalition and fundamental christian reconstructivists such as Jerry Fallwell, Pat Robertson, Ann Coulter, etc.

As you said, these people aren't christians, but they take a fundamental view of the world from the bible, rather than just follow Jesus' teachings.  If you let people like that gain political power, then we'll end up with a pseudo-christian theocracy governing America.

Christ leads the church not men. God's word does not change, it is the ruler to measure ourselves with, it is the bar set for us to strive for. No I don't go to church at the moment. Things are very confusing in Christianity right now. God's people are being tested.

Exactly Christ does lead the church but it's the men who run it and teaches his "word" to their interpertation. The different counterfiters as you said form different aspect of his teaches. Now I belive that christ would have been very tolerant of other people and what they do. But your talking about 2006 years of being interpertated and corrupted by people so all aspects of christianity are corrupt.

Think about it

Not true. Only problem is that the only press Christians are getting is negative press. There is nothing wrong with the Bible, in and of itself. It's the pastors and false prophets who twist the words to suit their agendas. Notice it's not the Word that corrupts, but the man who teaches it to his followers.

Corruption is a trait of man, not God.
