Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced today the phased ending of the Army's use of its "stop-loss" policy, which extends soldiers' tours beyond the end of their enlistment contracts, and which critics have often called a "backdoor draft."

As of January, there are currently 13,200 soldiers continuing to serve in the Army beyond the tours of duty stated in their enlistment contracts. Gates announced a two-year timeline that will eliminate the ranks of soldiers currently serving in the Army under the policy by the spring of 2011.

Who gives a fuck about the president of eight years ago?

What major conflict were we in at the time?

The war was never even part of the budget, and there weren't  enough men to deal with it.

Do some thinking before you start spouting off.

I agree, it caught me for 7 months.  I didn't bitch; I always knew it was a possibility.  My job had been stop-lossed 3 times while I was in, all before Iraq ever happened; it was because there were not enough new people coming into my specialty.  Those stop-losses never affected me because I was always already deep into my enlistment.  So, when I was stop-lossed for Iraq, it was not the end of the world.  It was just never big news until it made headlines because of Iraq.  I did not see all this moral outrage when my soldiers got stop-lossed back in '97 or '99!

Marine has a point, you would sometimes need to recall soldiers who knew what the fuck they were doing, especially NCO's and Officers. It's always a possibility to be recalled, and isn't one in 4 years as reserves after they finish active duty?

He kept me from getting sent back again. I know a WHOLE LOT about Iran-Contra.  Everyone from the bush administration had their hands tied to that.

No, not that... the way it works is that when you enlist, no matter what you think you are enlisitng for, it is an 8 year contract, minimum.  It may say "3 years active," but then you are in the IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve) for the other 5 years.  The IRR is just basically a pool of veterens; they have no meetings or training.  You are just able to be called back into acitve service in case of emergency.  They are even lower on the activation schedule than National Guard/Army Reserve, as the IRR is not maintaining any sort of physical readiness or training.

Comparing Bush to Clinton is like comparing assholes to bleeding cunts.  Same address, different flavor.

Clinton had a nasty tendency to quietly send troops all over the world, but never in enough numbers to actually get things done.
Just enough to be able to claim he was doing something, not enough to actually accomplish anything.
Just enough to get a good number of people injured or killed, but not so many that the deaths would show up on CNN.

Clinton used the US Military as a tool in his personal PR program, and not in the best interests of the USA, and sure as hell not in the best interests of the soldiers.

Oh, and the whole BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) fiasco was a barrel of fun.  Turned into more of a political leverage & pork tool, and not so much of an honest assessment of what bases we really needed.  Was the aide to a post Commandant when the BRAC committee rolled through - had a better seat to that circus than any lower enlisted had a right to.

Ive read that the base closures under clinton were actually planned under bush and clinton actually didnt cut as much into defense as bush had originally planned.
