Ex-bf2 player here... I played BF2 regularly and in competition from the day it came out until the patch that nerfed dolphin diving and took a huge chunk of the skill required out. I remember how bad the CTDs were initially, with basically a 33% chance of hitting the desktop after loading. I also remember a patch fixing that, completely eliminating the issue.

A few weeks ago I decided to give the game a try again. I was running XP, and the game was loading fine. I've since switched to Vista 64 bit, and the game crashes every time I try to join a server. It crashes a few seconds into verifying the data. I can host my own server and the game loads, probably because it doesn't have to verify the data. I'm thinking the problem is with Vista/BF2 compatibility. Is there a known issue with BF2 and Vista 64? I'm going to try a reinstall, but it takes so damn long for me with all the patching and cd swapping.

wow man, I don't know what to tell you except CTD is a big problem with the current patch and bf2. Hopefully the next patch.. if ever made, will fix the CTD problem. I use XP and it works fine, no CTD lately, I hear Vista and bf2 are having lots of troubles lately.

That's actually good news. Means it's software and not hardware. Was worried it might be because my CPU is oc'ed (despite passing every stability test I've thrown at it and never causing a single crash). In that case, it would be BF2 going out the door.

Any idea when 1.5 is coming? I was just playing AIX offline, and it looks pretty cool, sort of like DC for BF2.

I have suffered from this symptom in two ways.

1. CTD when connecting server -

resolved this by deleting the pb (punkbuster) folder and reinstalling punkbuster:

Found in your BF2 install directory.

http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-bf2.php

Additionally remove the shader sets.

You can do this by running Battlefield 2 cleaner, or delete the contents of the cache directory found in the BF2 mods directory found in my documents.

2. CTD when changing kit. The cause of much frustration as I change kits regularly.

I'm not sure I can go as far as to suggest I have eradicated the problem, but it has certainly, significantly reduced as an issue.

Instead of installing the ATI catalyst center or the ATI driver with control panel, when the installer has extracted the files into its temporary directory, use the Microsoft device manager and install via there. You get the working drivers without all the paraphernalia associated with (in this case) the ATI driver set.

Whether this is the root cause I've no idea, but it certainly helped me.
I am currently using Vista 64bit, and suffered the same issues indicated above, with both operating systems.

Hope this helps

I rarely get crashes anymore with XP, it was only bad in 1.3, with the regular server crashes...

Also changing kits in SF seemed to be the most common reason to cause it for me...something to do with deployed grapples/ziplines perhaps?

I have x64bit vista with 8ig of ram, the only problem I had was with PB/vista SP-1, I would try running it in differant settings, as in: all low all med etc, also try running it in xp-sp2/win2k etc. It sounds like a gfx card problem. revert back to an older driver. Ensure PB is running both in progmaes/x86, C:/window/sys/32 and C:/windows/syswow64. Also this might help....

QUESTION
What is the install order for the Battlefield 2 lineup?

Answer

To ensure a proper installation of the Battlefield 2 series, please install in the following order. If you do not have all of the expansion and booster packs, please skip and install the next software on the list.

   1. Install Battlefield 2.
Note: If you have the Battlefield 2 Deluxe pack, install and skip to step 3.
   2. Install Battlefield 2: Special Forces.
   3. Install the 1.41 full patch, which can be found here.
   4. Install Battlefield 2: Armored Fury.
   5. Install Battlefield 2: Euro Force.
   6. Install the 1.41 full patch once again.

Once this is done, you will have the complete installation of the Battlefield 2 series lineup.

if you are using vista 64 and have like 4gb ram, bf2 gets in trouble with adressing the memory. search for "memory.dll" and vista 4gb ram in combination with bf2 etc. i´ve found an altered version of the bf2.exe which works fine now, because it can handle more than 2gb ram. since then, no ctd anymore...

Crashing to desktop is a common problem, normally caused by someone raging after being kicked by a 13 yearold german admin for using clays. The solution to this problem is to not play on faggoty german servers, and hope you're not on the same server as DU or Jihad

Well I've fixed the problem for the most part. I did a complete reinstall, and it almost completely eliminated crashes/weird stuff. I did the exact same thing this time around (install, patch, delete movies) as I did with the first installation, but this time it works. I don't know why it works this time, but it does, so I'm happy.

I did get a memory.dll problem, but that was with the AIX mod, which has ridiculous memory requirements. I suspect BF2 can't address enough memory, because I was only hitting 58% usage when the crash occurred (1.5 GB used by BF2). Like I said, that was with a mod, so it doesn't concern me.

I also got an error in game about having the wrong version of BF2, and that I needed to revert to the official version (paraphrasing from memory). This occurred during a map change after being on a server for ~20 minutes. Very odd...

If anyone's curious, here are my specs:
e6750 @ 3.4, Prime95 and IBT stable
2 x 2 GB DDR2 @ 1020
8800GT @ 650 core/stock RAM, nVidia driver 182.06
Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP1 + all updates

You need a punkbuster update. I posted a link sometime earlier this year but I don't remember in which topic here. I'll try looking it up.

edit. Search didn't seem to work for some reason.

Run the game in windowed mode, it should give you a popup screen which tells you went wrong.

My wife's computer is running Win XP SP3. I just bought her a copy of Battlefield 2: Complete Collection at the EA Store online. After installing once, she had accidentally installed it to a folder with a bunch of stuff in it and the game didn't show up in Add/Remove Programs. After deleting all the Battlefield 2 related files by hand, I made her a separate Battlefield 2 folder and re-installed the game.

I downloaded PBsetup.exe from www.evenbalance.com and made sure her PB client was up to date.

After starting the game, I was able to log on to a server for about 2 - 5 min before getting a CTD. After a few crashes from me trying again and again, I decided to check on NVidia's website for updated drivers for her 9600 GSO. I found a new driver that just came out July 21'st and updated the drivers on all of my machines.

Following the driver install, I rebooted all of our machines and tried to load my wife's BF2 again. This time, it stayed in a server for about 10 minutes before CTD. I'm about to try installing the 1.41 patch and see if that fixes anything...

I guess that's why you're CTD'ing then.

You need the latest patch... lol

It doesn't fix it. I tried that and everything else, and after 2 days worth of crashing to desktop, I stopped playing.

If you are using windows vista, make sure you run BF2 with admin rights. Otherwise some punkbuster shit will crash you.
