There's usually a little icon with two computers in the taskbar, but it's disappeared, and only wireless can be used to connect to the internet now. The last two times I started the comp, the icon had a little speech bubble saying it was having problems with the connectivity, but I put it down to an error with XP. Now the icon's gone altogether, despite the cable still being in, and network connections also has no listing of ethernet. It's a onboard connection - the cable connects to the desktop, and I haven't had a problem with it before. Any ideas as to where it's gone/how to get it started again?
Re-installed your network drivers? What main-board do you have?
I had that prob a few weeks ago, did like baggs says. Uninstall and then reinstall from device manager

It's a ...dammit, the box is downstairs. From memory it's a Gigabyte S3 series 945P motherboard. Think it's a realtek driver.

I'd check it's plugged in securely and after going through the bios if it's still not found buy a new ethernet cable. They are pretty cheap.Cheez wrote:

I found the drivers and reinstalled. Restarting now.
Edit: still no entry in device manager, might need to open up the case and prod the connector.
Nope, even worse, system hangs at startup logo. Safe mode+restore coming up.

Must say, I don't really trust Gigabyte's programs. They make reasonable hardware, but the programs irk me.
Actually, as an aside, I've had bad experiences with netgear - I updated the firmware, but it never finished and ended up useless. Even Lenovo didn't do that.
Update done, startup happening...no lan connection.

Right so your network connection was enabled? When you look at the backplate of the motherboard, is the little green LED lit up near the network connection socket?
Open up your case and check everything is secured into your motherboard.
