True, but since you have more money to begin with, you're able to tax more. Down here, the only way you could probably match that is to just tax the rich a lot more, which probably wouldn't work in the long run, since most of the reason rich people come here is because of lower taxes. Also, it's why businesses have been moving here.DoctaStrangelove wrote:
Also the NE has higher taxes, and a larger percentage of those higher taxes are given to the schools.Turquoise wrote:

Although General Lee was eh pretty cool guy.
Still, you're right. In general, the Northeast does have better school systems than the South. States in the Northeast do typically have a lot more money than the Southern states as well, which is probably part of why those systems are better.
Well, just in case it does...DesertFox- wrote:

Honestly, stop all this bickering. It's turning into a "bloody northerners" thread. We should all stop right now and agree that the Midwest is best.
And some areas are very very rich.. palm beach for example. We have our fair share of immigration problems. That is where a good amount of the poverty comes from. Florida is actually below the national poverty level though.Turquoise wrote:
From what I've read, Florida shares much of the same problem that NC and Georgia do -- poverty. Some areas of Florida are very poor, and as a result, have bad schools that desperately need funding.Kmarion wrote:

Yeah...my 2nd cousins who I mentioned went to a private school. My uncle (twice removed? who the fuck knows) refused to put them in a public school because of the bad shape they were in at the time of enrollment (1997, since they're a year older than myself).
And the school in my grandparent's town looks like it's straight outta Compton. Coconut Creek High School.
It's not a lack of capacity to learn. I have seen some people explain some really complicated (albeit mundane) things. But no, they probably couldn't name all of the 50 states.

From what I've seen, North Florida and South Florida are pretty much polar opposites. I saw confederate flags flying in the northern part..
I could name plenty of other places but I don't think you guys will have heard of them . Tiger Woods has a nice little shack in Orlando.Poseidon wrote:

The thing that kind of scares me about Florida is its crime.Kmarion wrote:

Including D.C., Florida has the 6th highest overall per capita crime index in the U.S (in 2007). It was 10th in 2005, and 7th in 2006.

Granted, N.C. is 9th highest.
Overall, the highest crime indexes tend to be in Southern states, despite the Northern stereotype of crime.
Orlando's also got a pretty poor area, does it not?Kmarion wrote:

There was one place we went to which was a REALLY rich area...I think one of the houses actually belonged to Oprah, lol. I know it's in West Palm, but I forgot what the area it's in is specifically called.
This is a picture (not mine):

huh? When I think crime I think of DC, PG County, LA, and New Orleans. Two of those are arguable not so much north as they are mid-atlantic, and one is in the west.Turquoise wrote:

Don't be scared though Turq. I'll save you a place under the desk if you ever come down . Keep it in perspective.Turquoise wrote:

I am though. I've been to Florida a few times (Miami in particular), and I was actually born in a small town near Orlando.Kmarion wrote:

NYC is eons better than it used to be, as is Newark. You can thank the Mayors. Can't speak for Chicago, Camden and the rest though.Turquoise wrote:

I am not surprised. In my college years, majority of my peers got this question wrong:
"Name the cloest star to the Earth?"
I was like idiots gOsh

But yeah, I heard Guiliani cleaned up NYC.
Chicago seemed decent when I went there. DC is also pretty good save for the Southeast quadrant.

The actual city part of Chicago is nice, it's the semi-suburb areas on the south side where all the gang activity is, and then you have a bunch of crime over in Indiana in Gary.
Only in California, [sarcasm] thanks to the wonderful education in Cali everyone around here is a genius[/sarcasm]
I won't elaborate cause I don't want to be flamed by a neanderthal.
