And this is a good example of what the private sector can do to head off bigger government; step up.

If we basically all fend for ourselves that creates a need for a bigger government, and those complaining the loudest about that should post what they do to help their community.

My wife or myself serves food one weekend a month at a homeless shelter. It's actually good lulz as those people are mostly insane.

I feel I would be more willing to volunteer my time and money if I knew that the Government wasn't empowering many of the people to continue making bad life choices.

ie  the teen mom child factories, free needles for druggies, free healthcare for illegals to create more crime and homeless .....

it would almost be like swimming against the current, and I would flip out the first time someone started acting all entitled to shit and defending their poor choices.

One of the things we do is give them socks.

They walk away, stuff it in their pockets and come back for seconds. We say " was your brother just in line? " and they look all sheepish and may reply; " oh, my brothers here today? good, i was trin' to find him. "

we lol and give them all they want.

I have to side with lotta_drool on this one, I've been to the welfare office, and it's not laid off businessmen, its the chronically unemployed, and I'm not willing to help those who won't help themselves.

Things may be different in Mormon country, but in the urban areas around here, you're just enabling...

Is this why the crack addicts always keep their stash in a sock in their jacket?

I think the church, family, and community are great for helping people.  These organizations can alway give them guidance and counceling with aid and not blacket acceptance of immoral and unethical behavior.

The government just gives an entitlement and pro-quo defacto reinforcement to bad behavior.

Exactly.

90% of the people who I have seen on welfare are just lazy, unemployed people with no ambition to get a job or do something with their lives except leach off other people.

What pisses me off even more is the ones who spend around $500 a month on Lotto tickets and other useless junk and go on welfare just for the extra cash.

I let the state keep the five cents they owe me for tax overpayment.

other than that, my community is going rapidly down the drain, people are moving out at record rates as immigrants take over.

Drawing plans up for renovating buildings for community projects. Like a cinema, a theatre, recording studio, youth club/cafe. The groups come to me and I draw up the initial plans for free. Usually the group uses my plans and graphics, adds a business plan and seeks funding from various sources.
Id say I have done about £5000 worth or work I didn't invoice or got paid for. The projects that did get funding all then paid me well, tho I had to wait2-3 years until the project is finished.
Was a founder of our local Music Collective, which is now passed on to the next generation. They inherited a Professional Martin Audio stage rig and recording studio from us. And now use it to make fucking terrible new age punk bollox with!
I have no time for anything now, but paying the bills.

Charity is nice, but it's a sign that govt is failing to provide a sufficient safety net.

I heard one wall streeter refer to social programs as socialist and the taxing measures to support them as being "unrecognized charitable contribution." I guess that a$$ wants to be the one getting the pat on his self aggrandizing the back. That guy is an arrogant a$$ trying to say that he should get to decide what groups of people deserve his help and his money. "I'll help the groups x and y who belong to this faith. or to this group which will use my money to try and attract people to my faith."

Personally, I'll give someone money if they come up and ask but I never give to an organized charity or religious institution. I despise paternalism as waste of my time and energy. I don't ask if the guy is going to use the money to get drunk, high or use it for food. I don't give to organized charities because they take too much off the top for overhead, salaries and they engage is acts of paternalism.

I wonder what the offset is between actual squandering of social assistance by its recipients and the actual cost of enforcement measures to catch cheats. I bet you the effort is not worth the return. The effort just helps reinforce the harmful stereotypes that many people hold and to give an excuse to republicunts who are always looking for an excuse to cut "entitlements."

There are a whole host of reasons why social programs should not be left to charities and faith based programs. Dsiocriminatory attitudes amd ugly stereotyping is just one of them.

OHHHHHH my million dollar machine just caught your brother coming through the line to get $10 in food, shame shame shame, I bet you were going to buy drugs weren't you.... Shame Shame Shame!!!  trying to get high and forget that shit hole you live in shame shame shame
OHHHH you're GAY!!!! get outta my church!!!!! you can starve until you "straighten" out.

Personally I don't think its necessary or decent and its the govts responsibility to protect its citizens from the negative effects of the market place.

That is one of the key differences between liberals and conservatives.

Liberals think it's the government's job to take care of everyone.

Conservatives think it's the government's job to only take care of those who are unable to care for themselves...but to provide the opportunity for everyone else.
