That's the thing, Taliban and AQ ideology are very close to each other, hence why AQ were having such a field day in Afghanistan until the party was gatecrashed. So it would be pretty impossible for the Taliban to work against AQ...

These days Taliban is just a general term for all the people fighting against ISAF, it doesn't necessarily mean all of them are pure Taliban longing for the glory days. Alot of them are just those Pashtun nationalist tribes who are just known to fight all invaders, alot of people are doing it for money etc.. it's just that people just clump it all together. Kind of like how all the people fighting against the Coalition in Iraq were dubbed as terrorists. To think that all the enemies in Afghanistan are under a single Taliban banner would be stupid... it's just an easy term to describe the enemy in that country instead of confusing everyone with all sorts of names.

Actually, Taliban is still specific to the Talibs. There are distinctions made between the Taliban, the anti-coalition militants (ACM), and AQ.

Had they not harbored AQ leadership and knowingly allowed AQ to train in their country...maybe. Most likely, the last administration wouldn't have paid much attention to the Taliban unless they did another Buddha-demolition job.

There was a little thing that happened that altered the US's view of the Taliban. Happened about 7.5 years ago.

By reaching out to Taliban "moderates" (of course they're all batshit crazy but some more than others no? That's the case with any organization) could it not cause internal problems for them?

Perhaps the "moderates" realize that fighting against the most powerful military in the world and hiding in caves is futile? Just speculating. Could save us some trouble in the long run.

Moderate Afghanis, we can deal with.

Thinking there are moderate Taliban shows a lack of understanding of what 'Taliban' means.
