MI5 and the Army certainly think so:

BBC wrote:

Members of the Special Reconnaissance Regiment, which has been at the forefront of the intelligence war in Afghanistan and Iraq, have returned.

The Policing Board member said there was no doubt that there was "a level of dissident threat and it is serious, it should not be dismissed or under-estimated and it requires a full policing response".
Source

The government and security services believe dissident republicans pose a greater threat than ever.

The threat assessment has been raised to "severe", meaning an attack is regarded as highly likely.

The decision to upgrade the level was made by MI5 - responsible for gathering intelligence on dissident republicans.
Source

The intelligence service MI5 is still devoting considerable resources to Northern Ireland, according to a report from a Parliamentary committee. The Intelligence & Security Committee Report has revealed MI5 allocated 15% of its resources in 2007/08 to what it calls "Irish-related terrorism".
The committee reports that dissident republicans continue to pose a threat in NI and the rest of the UK.

It said some loyalist groups continue to engage in violence and other forms of serious crime.

Worrying. A group of religiously indoctrinated muppets with kitchen cleaner and flour is one thing, but these guys practically wrote the textbook on modern terrorism.

Don't think so rdx, Ted seems fairly level headed.

David636 or 363 or w/e... Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellll.... He's a bit of a party animal but he's not into terrorism for crying out loud. None of the other Irish dudes on here are as young as those two to my knowledge and even the ones fairly young like CPoe understand that terrorism isn't a great way of getting things changed.

No, its not the next generation. Its the hardcore. They have always been there. When the IRA & INLA called there cease fires the people who believe the political path will not result in a united Ireland, formed the Continuity or Real IRA. Its made up of the hardcore. People blinded by hate. Usually from Border towns which were heavily occupied by the army and where their attitudes hardened. Not to say that a new generation of these idiots isn't fomenting. But it is very mush old guys from the armed struggle who are the main instigators.
I have never been a fan of British army interference in N.I. But if they are here I doubt you would hear many complaints nationalist or Unionist if they lined these "real" IRA men up and shot them.

Doubt that's the case, the troubles touched too many families.

If anything they seem to have seen the troubles for what they were and believe in live and let live.

I'd say the majority of people i speak to about it see it as a turbulent time in history, that did no-one much good. The majority still cling to their core beliefs, but don't see violence as a way of getting them.

On the other hand the people i talk to this about are at university, soo...

On one hand I think this stinks, its like a smoke screen for something else, ie something bad is going to come out in the UK lets cover it up in the media with IRA stories, on the other hand in the paper the other day the goverment was meeting with the army incase of mass walk out by the Garda /civil servants etc due to new taxes.

Or could the IRA be ready to capitalise on the public dismay with our goverment, and start it all over again, it appears the UK are running short of man power in the army so it would make sence for them to do it I guess. I hope Im wrong.

Side note, seems the goverment (Irish) has being buying up high profile buildings up north for while the likes of ex-banks buildings etc apparently for when the UK sign over the 6 counties. Then again I heard that from a not to sober man of the Dail. Now a member in the Seanad.

Anyways its near 2 am bit tired n had a few so best stop !

I think it's funny how this country has faced so many damn fatal bombings over so many damn years thanks to the IRA and co. Yet all it takes is one attack by the crazy Muslims and suddenly you need all this legislation to take away rights and liberty's and all that other crap, what the hell happened? This place has handled terrorism for so long yet all of a sudden its "different"

Same shit different people

Struck me as odd too over the last few years.

Same here in Aus... Except we weren't even attacked directly. We had terrorist attacks in the 80s, not major ones but they happened.

I'm not really down with the crack over in Ireland atm, but do you think this shit could rear its ugly head again?

After all the progress that's been made, why would people do this?

Very easily. Like with any form of terrorism, there's always those that don't want change. Plenty of groups over here without representation baying for blood. Like i said, Ireland practically spawned modern terrorism, you don't want this to kick off again.
