The Recorder Newspaper wrote:

"For CCSU student John Wahlberg, a class presentation on campus violence turned into a confrontation with the campus police due to a complaint by the professor.

On October 3, 2008, Wahlberg and two other classmates prepared to give an oral presentation for a Communication 140 class that was required to discuss a “relevant issue in the media”. Wahlberg and his group chose to discuss school violence due to recent events such as the Virginia Tech shootings that occurred in 2007.

Shortly after his professor, Paula Anderson, filed a complaint with the CCSU Police against her student. During the presentation Wahlberg made the point that if students were permitted to conceal carry guns on campus, the violence could have been stopped earlier in many of these cases. He also touched on the controversial idea of free gun zones on college campuses.

That night at work, Wahlberg received a message stating that the campus police “requested his presence”. Upon entering the police station, the officers began to list off firearms that were registered under his name, and questioned him about where he kept them.

They told Wahlberg that they had received a complaint from his professor that his presentation was making students feel “scared and uncomfortable”.

“I was a bit nervous when I walked into the police station,” Wahlberg said, “but I felt a general sense of disbelief once the officer actually began to list the firearms registered in my name. I was never worried however, because as a law-abiding gun owner, I have a thorough understanding of state gun laws as well as unwavering safety practices.”

Professor Anderson refused to comment directly on the situation and deferred further comment.

“It is also my responsibility as a teacher to protect the well being of our students, and the campus community at all times,” she wrote in a statement submitted to The Recorder. “As such, when deemed necessary because of any perceived risks, I seek guidance and consultation from the Chair of my Department, the Dean and any relevant University officials.”

Wahlberg believes that her complaint was filed without good reason.

“I don’t think that Professor Anderson was justified in calling the CCSU police over a clearly nonthreatening matter. Although the topic of discussion may have made a few individuals uncomfortable, there was no need to label me as a threat,” Wahlberg said in response. “The actions of Professor Anderson made me so uncomfortable, that I didn’t attend several classes. The only appropriate action taken by the Professor was to excuse my absences.”

The title is a little misleading compared to the article, however, living in the area and having my sister in law attend CCSU I was told that the campus police threw students around who were just standing around listening. Just wanted to clarify why I wrote that.

The more I hear about Connecticut, the more fucked up it seems.  Maybe Peter Schiff can fix it.

Amazing when you discuss serious issues on campus in an academic environment how this whole thing can blow up.  This guy has a case and I hope he wins and the professor is kicked out.

I voted yes, but I meant no. It's wrong and it shouldn't have happened, but that doesn't mean he should sue.

Wow, you can't even academically discuss guns anymore.  Pathetic.

Exactly...the discussion of the prevention of gun violence does not equate to using them on people.  Gee wiz.

Well what really happened? The professor didn't like his topic for whatever reason, the police gave him a hard time about it. So apart from feeling a little sad what's he really lost? As I said, it's ridiculous that it happened, but that's not ground for a lawsuit.

His civil rights were violated for one. He has the right to congregate on state property peacefully and civily which is what appeared to be the case. I have a fishy feeling if students were protesting the war in Iraq peacefully and were disbursed and arrested law suit papers would have already been filed.

And what's a lawsuit going to change about this?

Nothing. What would a lawsuit change for a woman who was sexually harrassed at work? Would it unharass her? My question is not whether you think he should sue, it is whether or not he has a legitimate reason to.

Further evidence of how completely the liberal intelligentsia misunderstand guns and gun violence ... ZOMG he owns guns AND he's discussing using them for self-defense, he must be a killer!  Eeeek!

He is probably just trying to avoid failing the class at this point. I doubt he had any intention of heading a new front (universities) for gun activists.

A few things I don't get:

What implications does the complaint by the teacher have on the student? Is it just that he walked into the campus police station only to get a list of his guns and their whereabouts? Because if that is the case then I don't see why anyone should be upset, despite the fact that I find the police's right to question you about anything for no apparent reason appalling and fascistic. On that note, wtf is the police doing within the campus in the first place? Hasn't anyone ever heard about freedom of speech? Especially within the campus! Around here the police are not allowed within the limits of the various universities to ensure exactly that. Freedom of speech.

How does an oral presentation manage to scare you? I mean ok, one might either agree or disagree with the guy... but what the fuck did he say to scare people?

This. It's rather a prick-ish move on the part of the prof, but could you see suing for some "pain and suffering" or whatever over this?
