I am considering adding an external hard drive to play ONLY BF2 from......my current hard drive is about half full (80gig) - and I am hoping the extranal drive will add to my speed.  In general, with a USB connection, will an external drive be as fast as an internal one?  I can do an internal one (dedicated only to BF) but would rather do external if possible (I need a little space for some other important files, non BF).

Any advice?

Thanks,

I'm not sure but I don't think so.
I wanted to do that aswell for some of my games

External is slower than internal, be it running off a USB or FireWire interface. However firewire would be a bit faster, however USB is better at handling constant streams of data.

So I'd recommend a USB external hard drive, however at the end of the day - you'd be better off with an internal one (as they are faster, no chance of driver conflicts, and it has been proven that some ext. USB HDDs can slow down computers with their drivers).

Thanks very much - this is very helpful - my gut told me that the external HAD to be slower.....but, I wanted to make sure I was not missing anyting.....

thanks again

eSATA would work better than either USB or FireWire.

eSATA is the way to go, you can get a a little port that sits in a pci mount and plugs right into an empty SATA port on your mobo.  I have a 300gb drive in a case I put together and it's awesome, a little slower than internal drives, but nothing as slow as USB or 1399, and it's hot-swappable!

Don't forget to think about just adding another internal hard drive. It can be much more convenient.

Here is another, possibly stupid, but associated question.

Do I need to re-install BF once I get the new drive going - or can I simply copy (or drag) all the BF files into my new drive, hit it with the newest patch again, (?) and be done with it?

Just cautious about installing it again and having problems registering it etc....have never attempted it with BF before....but have had problems with other software....

thanks

Still researching this......

going with a internal drive.

I currently have an Ultra ATA/100.....can I put a ATA150 in there?  I assume higher RPM and cache is better as well?

ok no.

first of all, external will be slower. period. That's just the way it is. An external is IDE -> USB -> Motherboard whereas internal is IDE -> Motherboard. So, skip the usb/firewire at all. (And for the record, usb2 *is* faster than firewire 400, but by so little it doesn't matter.)

what you WANT to do is partition your drive. The only reason to dedicate a drive to BF2 is to stop fragmentation or the datafiles. Fragmentation can slightly slow down the loading process. That's the only difference you'll see, if it is even perceptible. You can just partition of a 10gb chunk of the drive and get the same exact effect as wasting your money on a new HD.

If you do buy another HD, make sure it's a Raptor (10,000rpm) drive or better, as that's where you'll see the improvement.

Didn't even think of partitioning off a part of the drive.  I figured a dedicated 60-80gb drive (for $50 at NewEgg!) would be the best way to go.  I also thought this might help my in play quality....I am pushing my system right now (maxed out the RAM at only 1gb and using a 4 year old P4 2.4ghz).  Already upgraded my graphics card NVidia GE Force 6800 and thought a new hard drive was the only other thing I could do.  Just trying to avoid buying a new computer if possible......thanks for the advice.....

Just a post to remind everyone involved that USB and Firewire are not the only external HD options. eSATA, folks!

Additionally, you should be very careful what you do with a drive with multiple partitions. I recommend only one OS per HD. Currently, I have a Windows XP 64 installation on one drive for my dev tools, and a Windows XP Pro on the other for games. One storage drive for work, one storage drive for the internet. It's not necessary, but it keeps things organized.

If you want a nice test drive with decent speed to it, consider the Western Digital 40GB 7200 Serial ATA-150 (WD400JD, 7200 RPM, 8 MB Cache). Only a $35 investment.

This is a trolling post right??? I mean you can't be serious with an external drive for anything but storage.

(Lets leave scsi, fiberchannel out for the moment there seems to be enough confusion)

If you must get a drive, get an internal and there is no such thing as ata150. It's sata150 if you have sata then get the raptor reinstall everything and use the current drive for a backup.

Your best bet is to probably burn the p0Rn to DVD or CD, delete, then defrag. Your not going to see much improvement from a harddrive besides load times.

I used to run storage and games off of an External via a hevay duty gold plated firewire fore some serious speed. It worked wonders for me until I had a full system upgrade, then i replaced it for a Serial ATA Maxtor 250 gig. I would look into internals, its more efficient and easier in my opinion. I have a good friend who recetly just bought a cheap 40 gig raptor off of ebay for all of his games, he likes it and loads the BF2 maps before much of the other gamers (tank whore), so you might want to try that solution. Good luck with whatever choice you pick!

Thanks - after reading all....decided on an additional HD, that matches the specs of what I have (still don't know if I can put ATA150 in when I currently use ATA100....so went with the same, and not even sure what the difference it).  Got an 80g drive and will try to only have some critical stuff on there and BF2.  My current load times are LONG....so am hoping this helps....thanks.
