Erode the right to protest and you are on a very slippery slope.
But breaking the law while protesting erodes the value of said protest.
Tell that to Rosa Parks.

Rosa Parks was breaking a Jim Crow law which were illegal. You are comparing apples to bananas their.

Do you think that Cambridge University would let a group of students do that? Or would they react the same way as the NYU staff?
These are protesting what? Oh wait, NOTHING!!!!

If we just let people do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted that would be anarchy. I am one of the first ones to stand up for the First Amendment, but these dipshits are trying to abuse it.

That's the point - no it's not - when Rosa Parks refused to go to the back of the bus, I'm quite sure there were plenty of people that thought "what a retard" (or thoughts to that (if not worse) effect).

Her act of protest made people realise that it was they that were being the retards, not she.

When I was at university (not Cambridge) we did protest. We did occupy university property. And the university authorities let it happen.

Can I even remember what the protest was about?

No, I can't - that's how important it was.

You are just trying to be an ass and argue.

WHAT WERE THESE KIDS PRACTICING CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE FOR? What grand cause where they championing that we should stand up everywhere and barricade ourselves(shittly) in cafeterias and protest?

edit:
The kids were practicing their right and hell, the staff was practicing their right to remove them.

As I've already stated, their cause is irrelevant. Just as whatever the cause I and others protested whilst at Uni was utterly irrelevant.

It is the act of protest, not the cause, that is important.

I quite agree.

Yes, it is.

What is important is the prevention of people this stupid and misinformed from getting into college.

Scorpion0x17 wrote:

So, you think people who claim to be protesting should be immune to law?

Oh, and that recording is pure hardcore FAIL.  It was so stupid that I consider it offensive and indecent.
You might want to add a warning of some sort.

These kids were a nuisance and had nothing really to protest... The moron with the camera didn't even go to NYU...
you have to admit listening to the audio how stupid they sounded... these idiots are like the boy who cried wolf...
Next time there may be a real reason to protest and it will be tainted by these morons and their pointless protest...

Rosa Parks protested a law she thought wasn't fair(and she was right...) and it was a warranted protest... big difference

And like I said before, people choosing what laws to obey and disobey is Anarchy. Their are ways to have you voice heard, I understand them rising up to protest if they have been oppressed and their rights have been violated, but this is pure idiocy.

Ok, well, if you all think that the cause is so important, lets see what that cause was...

the students demands wrote:

9. That annual scholarships be provided for thirteen Palestinian students, starting with the 2009/2010 academic year. These scholarships will include funding for books, housing, meals and travel expenses.
10. That the university donate all excess supplies and materials in an effort to rebuild the University of Gaza.
Nah, clearly not a cause worth fighting for.

Nah, clearly not a cause worth fighting for.
Not really, how about giving those 13 scholarships to 13 people here in the US that are living below the poverty level and would never be able to go to school otherwise? How about donating those excess supplies to the [b]FAILING[/f] public school system here? They are laying off teachers here because they can't afford them.

Protests don't get people to listen to things like that. That is what petitions and rallies are for, contacting the proper people. Not barricading yourself in a lunch room and acting like a asshat.

Ah so now we get to the truth of the matter - you don't agree with what they protesting over.

Fine that's your democratic right.

And if you believe so strongly that those resources should go elsewhere, then you too have the right to protest.

See how it works?

That is possibly a good cause... the only thing that will be remembered though... is how these selfrighteous kids acted like idiots...
I didn't hear them mention the 13 palestinian kids once when they were yelling for people not to use force and calling people names...The cops were looking at them like...what the heck are you douches talking about... the kids besides the camera guy looked confused and not sure why they were there...lol

That I do, but I also disagree with the way they did it. With the way that group was acting they took away from the very cause they were trying to get recognized, to be honest I couldn't stand listening to the fuck. I got about 1/2 way and killed it. I got farther then the average American would ever get. I believe whole heartily in freedom of speech. But when you abuse that right and hurt what you are trying to help, you need to take a step back and rethink you choices.

Did they hurt their cause though?

They got us talking about it.

Eventually.

And that's the point about protest and why the cause is irrelevant - the point of protest is to get people to talk about whatever it is you're protesting about - that can be something totally irrelevent or it can be the most imprtant thing facing the world today - it doesn't matter - the cause is not the reason for protest - the outcome (people talking about the cause) is.

See my edit.

(we may not currently be talking directly about the cause, but it has been aired)

But the the end out weighed the means. The main focus is on how they sound like a bunch of druggy rich kids crying. Their goal was to bring these injustices to light but they pretty much got a Darwin award.

I could have sworn not. I'm pretty sure you get a honorable mention not an actual award.
