Whats it, about 3 weeks since Iran launched a satelite?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-p … 907039.stm

BBC wrote:

North Korea has announced that it is preparing to launch a rocket carrying a communications satellite.

It did not give a date for the launch, but said it would mark a great step forward for the communist state.

Correspondents say the statement is Pyongyang's clearest reference yet to what neighbours believe may be the imminent test of a long-range missile.
Unlike the Iran launch, this however just seems to be an excuse to test long range ordinance.

Discuss.

Call them what you want, they're still doing shit that the UK isn't even doing. When was the last time the UK did anything worthwhile like that, not withstanding stupid Euro EU projects where Britain contributed to some bolt at the top of the rocket whilst most of the shit was made by the French and was launched in some French Colony in South America

How does the story go from being "launching a satellite" to "long range weapons"?

"Correspondents say the statement is Pyongyang's clearest reference yet to what neighbours believe may be the imminent test of a long-range missile. "

What correspondents? Name them and their sources please.

Irresponsible reporting and low grade journalism.

How the hell can N. Korea afford to launch a satellite when most of their country is starving still?

If it's a long range missile, according to the BBC it could reach Alaska. In that case nothing of value would be lost.

Oh i don't have a problem with what they're doing (apart from like Macbeth said about a waste of money), but i'm also not seeing much fuore about this considering Iran did that same thing recently, and the media jumped on that.

Because Iran is actually a threat to Israeli, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan. Actually they're a threat to everyone in their region. N. Korea are just a bunch of isolated Koreans who can't stabilize their economy because they like spending all their money on weapons that they could never use on anyone.

Probably. I reckon they replaced him with an animatronic version.

I dont see what's the problem with them having a setellite...and well, if they actually use that as an excuse to test weapon...they would be in trouble. At least i hope so.

Since when do they care about trouble? they have no allies to speak of, and spend the majority of their budget trying to keep their population from fleeing the country

Why is everyone so quick to convict them.

No evidence of anything other than a satellite has been given here.

I hope you guys are never on the jury in one of my trials.

They blamed their nuclear test as an industrial accident and they're not exactly the worldwide leaders of telling the truth or being open.

Right.

'lil kim' there is so interested in developing N. Korea's infrastructure, world trade, and open communication abilities.  Of course he's launching a 'communications satellite".

Nevermind that his people have been starving for decades, but he always has a budget for military toys.

Nevermind that a closed xenophobic state like N. Korea has less than zero use for a communications satellite.

Let's all be totally naieve, and trust that lil' kim is interested in communications satellites, and NOT developing long-range delivery systems for their newfound nuclear weapons capability.

Only bit of advice:

Let N. Korea keep at it.  Let them 'cross that line' with Japan, S. Korea, or China.  Any one of those three, once truly threatened, will flat out wipe N. Korea off the map.  Gaijin stay out of it - the orientals can handle that little pissant excuse for a country.  That region truly does have 10,000 years of historic pissing contests between those three.

I'm gonna declare myself an independent state - so I get the sovereign right to 'launch a satellite'.

But it's a valid question. What gives us the right to have long range weapons but not N. Korea or anyone else we don't like. What exactly gives us the right to hold a sword over the head of everyone else and never allowing anyone to ever grab a sword in defense?
