BO is getting rid of what Bill Clinton and the republican congress put together in the 90s

... http://www.nypost.com/seven/02132009/po … 154838.htm
"This is radical change. States that succeed in getting people off welfare would lose the opportunity for increased federal funding. And states that make it easier to stay on welfare (by, say, raising the time limit from two years to five) would get rewarded with more taxpayer cash. The bill would even let states with rising welfare rolls still collect their "case-load reduction" bonuses.

In short, the measure will erode all the barriers to long-term welfare dependency that were at the heart of the 1996 reform. "

"Since Lyndon Johnson declared a "war on poverty" in 1965, this country has spent nearly $10 trillion on that cause. Yet, 44 years later, the poverty rate remains perilously close to where it was. By now we should have learned that throwing money at the problem doesn't work. "

"As a state senator, Barack Obama opposed the 1996 welfare reform. As a candidate for president, he praised its results. Where does he stand now? Does he really want to return to welfare as we knew it before 1996 and put millions more Americans on the public dole? "

the hits keep coming...  this guy is off to a great start...

What happened to transparency? For example why are the details of this huge spending bill so hard to find?

You can't have transparency and get all these "socialist" programs funded can you?

The freedom to choose. The freedom to decide what is best for me and my family, regarding healthcare, education, my fucking money. I do not want to be dependant on govt.

How can you not think that massive govt. control over your life sustains these things

But it doesn't effect you, or help you decide what is best for your family, your health care, education. And the only money that you lose is tax money anyway. This doesn't make you dependant on the govt. at all. It may make others, that choose to. It's not going to make you decide to live off welfare now is it?

And this isn't just an Obama reform, it has a lot to do with a Democratic Congress. They are going to rush through as much reform as possible, claim they have a "mandate" to do so by the voters due to the poll results and then for at least the next four years your going to see a lot of change just like this.

You do realize you made no sense what so ever.

This does not affect me? The only money I lose is tax money anyway?

This sounds like a post that is scrambling for a response and settled for this on short notice.

If it makes you feel any better, just consider every single cent you've ever paid towards tax, and ever will pay towards tax, as going towards that hospital down the street. Not towards some welfare recipient you cross in the street begging for change.

The way you cry about tax money really is bizarre.

Although on topic, I also think this is going a step in the wrong direction in terms of welfare/benefits

I think this is the govt realizing that people are going to lose their jobs, their unemployment is going to run out, then their 2 years of welfare will run out BEFORE the economy starts to turn around. A little action now by the govt should prevent roving bands of poor from committing crimes.

If people in business don't like, then they can start hiring or they can pay taxes to keep these people at home.... sorry no free riders. The "don't tax me bro" crowd are the real lechers on society. Their success is the culmination of all advantages that society has to offer. That society offers advantages such as education, health services, roads and other infrastructure based on taxation. Your success is directly related to the base created through taxation. But then when you become successful, these people start whining about how the taxation system is holding them back. You're as much a welfare baby as anyone and your success did not occur in a vacuum. Who are you to deny the poor the little comfort that a welfare check might provide when the alternative would be starvation? And why should the starvation of the poor be necessary to subsidize the living standard of the rich? You should be feeling shame for your views.

There is an old saying that where the first person of a group climbing a ladder to safety, upon reaching the top of the ladder, turns and says, "pull up the ladder, I'm alright Jack." If the economy fails as badly as it looks like its going to fail, I'm glad that OB is in the whitehouse to keep people from pulling up that ladder. If the REpublican'ts were in the whitehouse I have no doubt that we would have a string of tax cuts and deep cuts in all social spending, probably followed by high crime, oppression and revolution. The welfare state is the stablizing factor that makes a market economy possible, the lack of the welfare state was directly responsible for the rise in communism and the fall of the Russian Czar.

If Colman looses his bid with Franken in Wisconsin, Democrats will only need 1 Republican to get anything though the Senate.

I'm sure we're going to see ALOT more stuff 'rolled back' that the previous administration did...this is only the tip of the iceberg.
