It looks like George W. will make his speaking tour debut in my city.... but it begs the question, he snubbed canada after winning both elections (customarily the president makes his forst international trip to canada) so why come to Calgary Alberta to kick off his tour? why not Texas?

George in Calgary

Calgary is the most conservative major city in Canada, so that might have something to do with it.  It's also a major oil and gas center, a market he's pretty familiar with.

Generally presidents don't critique the sitting president immediately after leaving office - its keeping it civil for at least a year.

Well, here's a question...  Has that most recent parliamentary election occurred yet, or is it still coming soon?

If it hasn't happened yet, maybe Bush is trying to lend Harper a hand.

yeah its still up in the air. there might b a vote, there might not. Haper threw the conservative partys morals out the window with this new budget....

I've been out of the loop when it comes to Canadian politics for the last year or two.  What did Harper do with the budget?

he proposed a new budget, the opposition didnt like it. threatened a vote of no confidence. formed an alliance (Lib, NDP, Bloc) and coudve taken over gov't. but the Govenor General suspended parliament until the end of Jan, during which the Cons made up a new budget. but tbh it is more liberal than conservative. the way i see it is that no matter what the coalition has its heart set on a vote of no confidence

I get the impression that Canadian politics work kind of like this...

The Conservative party is the only right leaning party, which pits them up against the other 3 a lot, but on the other hand, this gives them an advantage in certain ways since the other 3 draw from similar demographics.

Is that accurate?

the Bloc is actually conservative. they were Stephen Harpers right hand political group. had lots of support from them. the only thing, is that the Bloc can only be voted for by Quebecois. the libs garner most votes from older generations, and NDP from younger (Me) although in the latest federal election not one party branched out really to my demographic (20's) so i didnt vote.

This whole debacle is a power grab. no matter what Harper does, they will get a vote of no confidence. sad but most likely true. No one in canada wants another vote. our last federal election was in october and they only campaigned for about a month before that....

I don't know as much about the Bloc Quebecois.  What are their stances outside of secession?  Like, what do they have in common with the Conservatives?

tbh i dont really know. my parents are from quebec, i speak french, but i know no one that supports them lol. they are like the hard core conservatives for...quebec. almost more conservative than the Cons. they believe quebec is their country, and theya re the rulers of it. i fucking hate em.

oh and quebec doesnt even have ndp, libs, cons. they hae their own french varients of those parties. kinda fucked if u ask me. they are part of canada so they should have the same parties elegible to vote for.

That's really weird, but I guess that would be like if Puerto Rico became a U.S. state.  They'd probably be very different from every other state.

thats a pretty good analogy. or like hawaii wanting to seperate. theres no doubt that quebec is kinda culrturally alienated from the rest of canada, but they kinda brought upon themselves.
