A New York man is linking the suicide of his 22-year-old son, a military veteran who had bright prospects in college, to the anti-Christian book "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins after a college professor challenged the son to read it.

"This professor either assigned him to read or challenged him to read a book, 'The God Delusion,' by Richard Dawkins," he said.

Jesse Kilgore committed suicide in October by walking into the woods near his New York home and shooting himself. Keith Kilgore said he was shocked because he believed his son was grounded in Christianity, had blogged against abortion and for family values, and boasted he'd been debating for years.

After Jesse's death, Keith Kilgore learned of the book assignment from two of his son's friends and a relative. He searched Jesse's room and found the book under the mattress with his son's bookmark on the last page.

sucks that he got to that point
but it's silly to blame atheism or christianity for his death... god rest his soul... RIP

Not sure what to think of this.

Part of me says the professor overstepped his bounds a bit by challenging him with this book.  Why mess with this kids beliefs?

Another part of me says the kid had more going on than met the eye.  He was probably struggling with some other issues and was confused about a lot of things.  This may have pushed him over the edge.  Never easy to have something you have believed in for a long time be challenged.

I think its the parents fault for drilling this idea into the kids head. He probably grew up extremely religious so when he finally found out the truth he couldnt handle it

Don't go there.  Lets not turn this into a religous debate.

College. We're not talking about a stupid little kid here.

And as for the OP's insinuations, lol.

Like we said, probably a lot more going on than meets the eye.  It could have been  his disillusionment in his faith that killed him.  Or we can say he succumbed to a lot of other pressures in his life and the father blamed it on the book.

Hm. This kid was a veteran, insinuating that he may have seen some horrible things overseas. He was also still quite young relatively speaking - it seems like a lot more people his age are suffering from depression. Who knows what else could have been going on in his life... and the blame is placed on a fucking book?

This is as laughable as the whole "GTA causes school shootings" thing.

And OP don't get me started on the deaths caused by fanatical religious practices.

Also, talk about a sensationalist fucking title.

I just had a poli sci class last semester where the professor challenged us to find a U.S. election where one single vote mattered.  He said he hasn't voted in many, many years because he was convinced that his one vote amounted to squat with the prevalence of miscounts, the way we run primaries, the electoral college not being truly representative, etc. etc. etc.

People in my class argued some, but eventually conceded that while one PERSON may make a difference in an election, via supporting a candidate, volunteering, getting people registered to vote, etc., that his point is actually pretty valid.  It takes a movement to elect a person, and people can serve as cogs in the machinery to reach that goal, but their 1 single vote is a fart in the wind in terms of a U.S. presidential election.  (Obviously, if EVERYONE felt that way, and no one voted, there would be a problem.  But that isn't realistically ever going to happen, so his point still is pretty valid.)

Anyway, in his other section for that class apparently a student freaked out on him, calling him un-American, cussing him and basically ranting and raving.  The teacher broached the subject in a way that was an open forum for rebuttal, but instead of defeating his argument with logical assertions, the student just flipped out.

Now this is far from a suicide story, but seeing how the teacher presented his case,  I couldn't see why someone would react in such an aggressive way.  Some people are simply imbalanced, to say the least.

It's sad that some people are emotionally fragile, but there's no one to blame here but the person who pulled the trigger.  It bothers me when suicide/murder/etc. is attributed to various media...I feel like there always has to be an underlying reason beyond that.

that kid's father is a fucking dipshit.

googling this story got me reading a couple message boards on this topic.  the discussion always seems to boil down to the dismissal of atheism because the idea of no afterlife, no heaven and hell, no divine retribution is "very unfair" and makes life pointless and worthless.

Fuck him, he was a weak minded idiot sheep who couldn't handle reality. Darwinism in action baby.

Perhaps if he hadn't been brainwashed into adopting the psychological crutch that is Christianity as a mindset for life he might have been tough enough to handle the shit life throws at you.

And as for atheism causing millions of death... Pot? Kettle? Black?

Exactly. What do the religious right suggest we do? Burn all books of this nature like the Nazis? Perhaps we could bring back the Spanish inquisition to deal with heretics like Dawkins too? Unbelievable.

If your world view is so flimsy and false that one book can tear it to shreds then perhaps you put all your eggs in the wrong basket? Why not try blaming the bible for his suicide for filling his head full of fairy tales?

To all of you who are bashing this kid's father:

He just lost his son in one of the most tragic ways possible. Do you really think he's thinking rationally right now?

But it's OK to bash him, because he's a religious whackjob, right?

Why hasn't anyone asked or made a comment about the appropriateness of a biology professor assigning a book like that? It has fuckall to do with biology.

Regardless, obviously the kid had far more going on than just that book. Neither that book nor the Bible (nor his dad, nor Richard Dawkins, nor his biology professor) are responsible for his suicide. There's only one person responsible for that kid's death...and he's dead now.

I wouldn't end my life if I found out that it was the only one I had, heck just more reason to stay alive.

Oh well this book might been the last to push him over the edge or so.

The article said that the guy believed in intelligent design. The book, amongst other things, presents a good argument against intelligent design and for evolution, which is appropriate for a biology class.

No, it isn't. Intelligent design vs evolution is a theological point, not a biological point.

It's both.

Intelligent design pushes the idea in a designer. Evolution does not.
