No, arguing that ex-grunts have a better idea about strategy than anyone else is like arguing the guy who sweeps streets should be the authority on city planning.

They, unlike any of us, actually have experience with how this all is conducted in real life. While they might not have been flag officers they DO have a rough / good idea of how exactly everything is supposed to work.
They spent months in a hostile environment USING these tactics and strategies.
They know how the military works, on a VERY different level compared to you and Vilham.

There is not one thing hard to understand about that.

your example is also very flawed. The military isn't remotely comparable with city planning and street sweepers.

And the UK have the Illustrious, the Ark Royal and the Invincible in reserve. As far as aircraft carriers go, we're probably the most sorted after the US. Also two brand new ones being built.

Not that aircraft carriers would play any major role in a war with France.
Unfortunately, and slightly embarrassingly, France has a bigger navy than us now I believe.
It's kinda borderline though isn't it?

Especially since the first Type 45 went into service today, which is probably the best destroyer out there.

You know who knows more about making these decisions than ex-grunts?

THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE DECISIONS (well, not actually them - the people who advise them on how to make the decisions).

Also, whilst you do present a very valid point about them being more familiar with the workings of the military, there is also more room for bias in their opinions. For example, I have noticed a tendancy for ex-military personnel to claim the branch of the military they were a member of is the most important.

Not sure, was a while ago when I heard that our recent decommissions made the Royal Navy smaller than the French. Might be different now.

Officers claim that aswell, if not in front of the camera - behind it. It's natural, and fun .

Ofcourse people who make decisions are even more familiar with the strategy aspect (however there are different levels of this aswell, leadership of a camp, or a small patrol/small scale combat? - in which the soldier with various combat experiences will have a valuable opinion on what works and what doesn't. Especially against a rookie officer) I don't however know of any on this forum.

dayarath, strategy is not the same as tactics. Grunts utilise tactics, Generals utilise strategy.

And if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.

And Vilham...grunts use strategy as well. It's not as neatly tiered as you would be led to believe by wikipedia.
