WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Timothy Geithner won confirmation as U.S. Treasury secretary on Monday and vowed to act quickly to protect the U.S. economy from the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

President-elect Barack Obama’s choice to be Treasury secretary, failed to pay tens of thousands of dollars in federal taxes and also faces questions about the immigration status of a former household employee, according to the committee and the Obama transition.

After the underpayments were detected, he paid back taxes and interest totalling $43,200.

This idiot evaded the IRS and now he's in charge of it.

He supposedly "forgot" to do his taxes. right. He also got busted for putting his kids trips as 'business trips'.

/facepalm.

The taxes PLUS interest only came to $43,200. It's not like he was hiding a huge sum when you consider the amount this guy is earning. And he's paid it back, the IRS obviously didn't have much trouble convincing him he owed it.

Glad the IRS didn't try to hide the fact they caught him or he was above the law. Is the usual punishment for such just to pay the money back plus interest? Why isn't there a fine for wasting tax payer time and money chasing this guy for payments?

I voted for Obama, but Stingray is kinda right there -- at least when it comes to the black vote.

I think a higher percentage of other races voted for Obama for reasons besides race, but then again... if there had always been black presidents, and then a white candidate finally made the nomination of either big party, I'm sure whites would heavily support that guy.

Anyway, Geithner sounds like an asshole. He's yet another bailout junkie.
