My 2 cents: Personally I don't smoke but I drink a lot. The thing I noticed is that despite the obvious that alcohol is worse for your health, there's a difference in the people depending on who does what.

I got lots of friends who smoke pot, and most of them are of a certain mentality - they do what they do and they really don't care about their health or anything else for that matter. All they want is to get high. Sadly in the long run - after 15 years that I've known some of them - many don't just stick to pot either. Under the right circumstances they won't hesitate to step it up a notch.

That's the main difference I think. Me and a few close friends will only stick to drinking. And we only drink on social occasions - that is when we go out to a bar or some party. We can all hold our liquor, but nobody will be drinking home alone for example. Not even beer. For us getting a bit drunk (or a lot sometimes ) is all about the company and good spirit. Not something we do on a daily basis. Weeks or even months might go by without drinking anything and I will never crave it.

On the other hand all pot smokers I know are wasted most of the time - whether home alone or out with friends. For them it becomes a lifestyle. The fact that they smoke pot is sometimes even their main characteristic.

For tokers pot seems to become the focus of their lives, whether or not they admit it.
I don't ask tokers what they are doing at the weekend any more.
Usually it was 'I talked to my man, he's got this new stuff in, its like really mellow but its got a kick OK? So like Saturday I'll just chill, then later I'll get sorted. Sunday its just you know.'

I've just never liked the idea of inhaling stuff. So if I do either of those two things, I drink.

I don't know which is worse, though. I guess they're probably both fine in moderation ... but I really don't know enough of the science behind it all.

Thought not. Since it hasn't been tied to it, or emphysema. It is horrendously bad at causing chronic bronchitis though.

Alcohol is bad in excess because it causes alcoholism, cirrhosis, etc.

Marijuana may be bad in excess not because of the leaf, but because a hardcore grass smoker might be more inclined to get into harder drugs, which generally come along with harder dealers. Dealers who aren't afraid to kill people if they don't pay up for their fix of meth.

I think it is more about the user. Some people can handle alcomahole, others weed. Some can do both without any problems and then there are those who can´t do neither. Unfortunately no one knows what he can handle before it is too late...
