Actually in this situation I am sure the pilot would have perferred a long straight peice of asphalt or an open grassy field. Must of been a very populated area and he had very limited options to do this. I remember the one that hit the Platomic River in the early '80s. People survived that too, they were still escaping the from the plane's air pockets after it sank to the bottom of the river.

I don't think so, the fire is going to be burning aviation fuel and water isn't going to help the situation at all. That's why they spray foam over the entirety of an aircraft that is on fire and never ever water.

And Drool, they were in a populated area... La Guardia airport. The guy landed his plane right off Manhattan in the Hudson.
