Some stocks seeing 85% drop in value for day
I mean, holy shit.
Day after day this is what it looks like.

State and cities are over budget and broke. Pensions are screwed. Social Security is broke.

Where will it end?

Many youtube gurus called this collapse well before it happened. If nerds could see it coming why couldn't the powers that be?

Or did they? If so, why are they letting it happen?

Greed + stupidity got us where we are today.

many blame the government, but we elected that very government, so anything they do is just a reflection of what the nation wants, and the nation as a whole is incredibly short sighted economically, and we always have been.

The south once fought to save a doomed economic system
Farmers once fought to implement a coinage system that would have destroyed the economy for those who don't know their history
We overcharged ourselves into a great depression
and now we tried to live in million dollar houses when we earned 25 grand a year.

As I've said before, we always choose instant gratification over long term stability, and it always blows up in our face.  I'd like to think the American people will learn from their mistakes, but i know they won't.  It's just a shame that responsible people like you an me have to sit through all the stupidity and watch our own investments plummet in value.

I recently watched a reporter asking that very same question to a number of "leading economists" who simply asked why didn't you warn us?

Overwhelmingly the response was "We should have, but we thought you could see this coming too. We were enjoying economic good times, the bad were sure to follow."

True.  American consumption has usurped all.  During past bad times our leaders would call for rations (like WW2) and a domestic focus on moderate spending and saving.  Now (circa 2001) our government pleads with us to "Spend spend spend" in dire times.  It seems like certain powers that be have this grand delusion that the might of our Armed Forces will be able to support the American public's need to consume.  We spend literally billions of dollars a week fighting dodgy wars, decrease tax revenue, and increase spending.  Then everyone wonders why the nation is in debt

I'm reminded of a quote from Donny Rumsfield after 9/11 (and I paraphrase) - "It's either we change the way they live, or we change the way we live.  We choose the former."

Where are these 1% interest rates you speak of?

And I think we will be saying Ni hao before Allahu Akbar.

Because China has developed its economy as such an export based economy that is entirely dependent on countries buying their shit, mainly western ones. They're going to be hit just as hard if not worse than anyone else in this global downturn. I've read and heard people talking about how the situation in China is going to be quite bad, and how it already is quite bad, but their government are good at masking things like this. Just build some more massive skyscrapers and complete a few engineering megaprojects and everything will look rosy

And good mortgage rates here are around 5%, but what's the point of mentioning a 1% rate (that the American public can't get) and then claiming "a nation full of entrepreneurs" (aka American public) can't make money off it?

rates did bottom out here two weeks ago.. Lowest I've ever seen them, at about a 4% for a home loan.. But even finding someone who has the credit, home value, income(no matter how low the rates go, the taxes are crazy) and assets to get that loan is 1 in about 10 right now.. It's like dangling a cheesburger in front of a fat kid whose in a cage.

or how about when inflation kicks in because they are printing billions of dollars with no backing but some central bankers pubic hairs?

Just as in the Great Depression 1 the feds policies will prolong the suffering by a decade.

30% unemployement, 25% interest on home loans and gold a 5k per ounce are what's in store for us.

If the bailout funds manage to save the banks it will do so having destroyed the value of the dollar, which will simply trigger a further, deeper spiral.

This is a perfect storm.

Thats the rate the central banks lends to other banks on intra day loans. The commercial banks have to lend at 50 basis points (.5%) above that though they usually lend higher. I think Australia's official interest rate is 4.25% and you can get mortgages for around 5.5%.

You know there is enough money in the world to give every kid on the planet a college education and end world hunger. So there is enough to sort the current crises out. Just there are more important things for our governments to spend our money on. There own astronomical wage and expenses, new ways to kill your fellow man..................etc.

And as for Internet nerds. There are enough of them ranting on the web to for-see every possible situation known to man, from the finical crises to who's playing the next bond. The majority of them are wrong all the time. Some just strike it lucky.
If they pulled themselves away from their PC and got out into the real world ppl might actually take them serious and listen to them. I often wonder if this generations Einstein or Hawking lives with his mum, eats microwave food and spends all day using there extensive intellect to coordinate a joint attack in WOW or argue with a faceless person across the Internet to a pointless end.

Drummer related rant.
Neil Pert, brilliant drummer. Too fancy and over the top to put him up there with the greats like Cobham, Rich, Caulligia, Wrek and Gadd. A great drummer accompanies the music and brings it alive. He plays all over the top and around the "pocket" (drummer term) without ever actually locking into a groove.

Yeah there's enough money for all of that.. But money isn't valueable at all... If everyone had the education and world hunger was ended, who'd have power over other people?
